The chaps looking great in there new NMP team polo’s & jumpers!

Sunday the 11th October, our Cornish Bowl team travelled to Truro golf club to take on Carlyon Bay Golf Club in the first of the winter knockout matches. It was also the first time seeing the club wear the new sponsored kit kindly supported and sponsored by Jacob Leech from Newquay Mortgage & Pensions and Richard Palmer from The Headland Hotel and Spa. It is fantastic to see the teams looking so smart and we owe a huge thanks to both of them, but also I want to extend thanks to Newquay Pro Shop, our Pro, Andy Evans for his support in supplying the new kit.

On to the golf, it was a tough day all round with the weather but everyone gave their all for the team. Unfortunately it was not the result we wanted, as we went down 3-2 in the match. The first match led us off with Jake Hickling and Rob Walker, they played some great golf and despite being 3 down after 11 holes, they fought back to take the match up the 18th, but Carlyon Bay managed to do enough on the last to hold on and win that match, but it was a valiant fight back by Jake and Rob. In the second match, Sean Millward and Benz Namlaphuttha started strongly and never let up. They were soon 3 up through 4 holes and were never looking like relinquishing that lead. They went on to get the first point on the board with a great 4&3 victory. The third pair of Neil Wyatt and Joe Wilcox also played some great golf but their opponents holed some crucial putts and both Neil and Joe despite their efforts just couldn’t get it back. They fought back from 3 down and at one stage looked to be taking it all the way, but their opponents holed from off the green on 15 to go back to 2 up. Unfortunately Neil and Joe went down 3&2 at the 16th green. Next up was John Treslove and Glen Robinson, who like Neil and Joe seemed up against all day, this was another match where perhaps Carlyon Bay just took their opportunity more than we did. This game was hanging in the balance all the way with just one hole separating the pairs most of the day. The 15th again favoured the Carlyon Bay pair where they went 2up and like Neil and Joe, unfortunately this match also went down 3&2. Dermot O’Callaghan and Rich Picking were the last match out there, they played well all day and despite not knowing the final result had gone against us, they battled on and in the end their opponents conceded on the 17th, giving Dermot and Rich and very well deserved 2&1 victory.

Although we lost this match, it genuinely could have swung either way and players did themselves proud on the day. Also a huge thank you to the caddies on the day, it was greatly appreciated.
