🚨Check what to do if HMRC has signed you up to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax.

From September 2026, HMRC will begin signing up customers that need to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax.

You will need compatible software that works with MTD to:

- Create and store digital records (for self-employment and for property income and expenses)
- Send quarterly updates to HMRC every 3 months

You will still need to file a self-assessment tax return and pay your tax bill by 31 January following the end of each tax year.

If you receive a letter saying you have been signed up, you must act immediately and follow HMRC’s guidance.

Further information is available from HMRC at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-what-to-do-if-hmrc-has-signed-you-up-for-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax

Please contact us for any assistance with MTD registration, quarterly updates and for help choosing MTD compatible software

If you’ve been contacted by HMRC telling you we have signed you up, find out what steps you need to take next.

From September 2026, HMRC will begin signing up customers that need to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income Tax for the 2026-27 tax year but are yet to do so.

More than 436,000 sole traders and landlords have submitted their first Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly update for the 2026-27 tax year.

Customers who have not yet sent their first quarterly update can do so now though their recognised software, with no penalty for late quarterly updates this year.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a legal requirement. Sole traders and landlords earning more than £50,000 from self-employment and property must be registered and file quarterly updates.

HMRC will publish new guidance in late August to explain what customers need to do if they receive a letter from HMRC about being signed up.

Please contact us for any assistance with MTD registrations, quarterly returns and for help choosing compatible software.
