Running a business is hard. I think we should say that more often.

The feed is full of wins. Launches. Milestones. Record months.

And those are worth celebrating, but they're not the whole picture.

Running a business is also chasing an invoice at 10pm. Not being sure if you can afford to take a day off. Wondering if you should be doing more, or doing it differently.

I see this in the people I work with. Not every day, but often enough to know that the behind the scenes of small business ownership is a lot harder than it looks on a good day.

The financial side of things shouldn't add to that stress. It should be one part of your business that you genuinely don't have to worry about, because someone has it handled and they actually explain things to you when you ask.

That's what we're here for!

What's one part of running your business that you'd love to hand off?

26 years in accountancy. Here are the 3 things I wish every small business owner knew about cash flow.

Because cash flow is the thing that takes businesses down. Not lack of sales. Not bad products. Cash flow.

1. Profit and cash are not the same thing. You can be profitable on paper and still not be able to pay your bills. If your money is tied up in unpaid invoices or stock, you have a cash flow problem even if your profit and loss looks fine.

2. 90 days is the minimum you should be looking ahead. Most business owners are thinking about this week. The ones who sleep at night are thinking about next quarter.

3. Cash flow forecasting is not complicated. It's just not done. It doesn't need to be a complex spreadsheet. It needs to be a regular habit. What's coming in? What's going out? When?

If you'd like to talk through your cash flow position, that's one of the things I do. A one off conversation can be genuinely eye opening.

Do you actively forecast your cash flow, or does it feel like something for bigger businesses? I'd love to know where you're at.

She thought she owed thousands in tax, BUT she didn't. Here's why:

A self employed client came to me mid year, convinced she was going to face a brutal tax bill in January. She'd been doing her own self assessment for a few years and had seen her income grow, so she assumed the tax had grown proportionally.

What she hadn't accounted for was the range of allowable expenses she'd never been claiming properly. Her home working costs. Her professional subscriptions. Her mileage.

None of these were complicated or borderline. They were just things nobody had ever walked her through.

Once we'd gone through everything properly, her tax bill came down considerably. And for the first time, she felt like she understood her own finances properly.

This is what happens when working with an accountant who takes the time to explain things. It's not just about saving money once, it's about understanding your business so you can make better decisions going forward.

Payroll mistakes I see small businesses make. More common than you'd think, and easier to fix than you'd fear.

Running payroll yourself when you're a small business owner can feel manageable. And sometimes it is. But these are the mistakes that crop up again and again.

Missing the RTI deadline. Even one month late can trigger an HMRC penalty.

Getting the pension contributions wrong. Auto enrolment rules catch people out constantly.

Not processing leavers correctly. This creates issues for the employee's future tax codes.

Not issuing payslips. It's a legal requirement, even for one employee.

Paying the wrong amount of employer's National Insurance. Especially relevant if you haven't claimed the Employment Allowance.

If you're handling payroll yourself and you're not 100% sure you're getting all of this right, it might be time for a conversation.

We handle payroll for businesses of all sizes and it's one of those things that, once it's sorted, you genuinely never have to worry about again.

Do you handle your own payroll, or have you outsourced it? What made you choose that route? DM me for more info on my services 💰

Sole trader or limited company? I get asked this every single week. And the honest answer is: it depends. But most people are asking the wrong question.

They ask: which is better?

They should ask: which is better for where I am right now?

Sole trader tends to work well if you're just starting out and want to keep things simple, your profit is relatively low, or admin overhead matters to you.

Limited company tends to make sense if your profits are growing, you want to pay yourself in a tax efficient split of salary and dividends, you're working with bigger clients who prefer an Ltd, or you want to protect your personal assets.

I help people make this decision all the time and it's never one size fits all. If you're unsure where you sit, that's exactly what a conversation with an accountant is for.

Are you sole trader or limited company right now? And do you ever wonder if you made the right call? Ask away below.

A client called me in a panic ... HMRC had been in touch, they owed money, and they had no idea what any of it meant.

This happens more than you'd think. And the worst part is, it's almost always avoidable.

In this case, they'd been filing their own self assessment for a few years. Not badly, but without really understanding the allowances they were entitled to, or the deadlines that matter beyond 31st January.

We got everything in order. Went back through their records. Found relief they'd missed. Communicated directly with HMRC on their behalf.

By the end, the amount they owed was significantly lower than they'd feared. More importantly, they finally understood their own situation.

They told me: I didn't realise how much I didn't know. And I didn't realise how much that was costing me.

You don't have to wait for a panic to get your finances straight.

The moment I knew I wanted to work for myself ✨

I'd been qualified for a good few years, working in accountancy in the traditional sense. I was good at it. I enjoyed it. But something was missing.

What I really wanted was to work directly with business owners. People building something. People who needed someone to genuinely care about their numbers, not just process them.

So I set up TH Accountancy Services.

And 26 years later, that's still what gets me up on a Monday morning. When a client tells me they finally feel in control of their finances, or that they slept properly for the first time in weeks after we got their books sorted, that's the job.

I'd love for my clients to think of me as the kind of person they'd trust with the big decisions, not just the annual return.

What made you start your business? I always love hearing the original stories 🩷

My accountant just does my tax return. I hear this all the time, and it breaks my heart a little.

Because if that's all you're getting, you're leaving a lot on the table!

Here's what a good accountant should be doing for you:

✔️Keeping you compliant, yes, including tax returns.
Flagging tax you don't have to pay.
✔️Advising on whether sole trader or limited company is right for you.
✔️Helping you understand your numbers, not just file them.
✔️Being a sounding board when you're making big decisions.
✔️Making sure payroll, VAT and Companies House filings happen on time.

I work with businesses at all stages, from brand new sole traders to growing limited companies, and the most common thing I hear when someone switches to us is: I didn't realise it could feel this straightforward.

It really can.

What's one thing you wish your accountant would do, or explain better? Be honest. I'm all ears.

We've FINALLY had an increase in mileage rates, which is long overdue as it hadn't been updated since 2011 - 15 years ago!

Previously, you could only claim 45p per business mile that you drove in your own car.

Now you can claim 55p per mile.

This is up to 10,000 miles per year (after that, it drops down to 25p)

You can claim mileage when you use your car to drive to:
✨ networking events
✨ seeing customers/clients
✨ business retreats
✨ training days
✨ in-person meetings
✨ brand photoshoots

For example, this means if you drove 500 miles in a year for business related travel, you would have been able to claim back £225.

Now, you'd be able to claim back £275 - £50 more in your pockets!
