The mortgage might be the biggest number but it’s not the only financial decision that matters when you move home.

A bigger house can mean higher monthly costs, less cash left in savings, different protection needs and a knock-on effect on everything from investing to retirement plans.

That doesn’t mean the move is wrong.

It just means it is worth looking at the whole picture before making such a big commitment.

In our latest article, we look at the financial decisions to think about beyond the mortgage, and how good planning can help make sure your next move still supports your longer-term goals.

If your income stopped tomorrow, how long could your household comfortably keep going?
A week?
A month?
Six months?
It’s not always a comfortable question, but it is an important one.
Savings, insurance, household outgoings and how dependent your finances are on one or two incomes can all make a big difference to how resilient your household really is.
You do not need to plan for every possible worst-case scenario.
But having a clear idea of what would happen if your income changed unexpectedly can help you spot any gaps before they become a problem.
So, how long do you think your household could comfortably manage?

Protection isn’t just about one area of your finances.
The right cover can help protect your income, your mortgage, your family and even your business if life doesn’t go to plan.
What you need will depend on your circumstances, but reviewing your protection regularly can help make sure the cover you have still reflects your responsibilities and priorities.
If you’re not sure whether your current protection is still right for you, get in touch with Brancaster House Financial Planning.

If your income stopped tomorrow, how long could everything else carry on as normal?

Your mortgage or rent.
Household bills.
Food.
Childcare.
Savings.
The lifestyle you’ve built around your monthly income.

For many people, the answer is uncomfortable to think about — but that’s exactly why it matters.

In our latest article, we look at what could happen financially if illness or injury stopped you working, and where income protection and wider financial planning can help.

Are you a spreadsheet-together couple, or does one person handle absolutely everything?

In some households, both people know exactly what’s coming in, what’s going out and where everything sits.

In others… one person knows the mortgage rate, the pension providers, the savings accounts, the insurance renewal dates and probably the Wi-Fi password too.

Neither way is necessarily wrong, but it is worth making sure both of you have a clear enough picture of the household finances, especially when bigger decisions come up.
Buying a home.
Changing jobs.
Starting a family.
Planning for retirement.
Or simply working out what you both want your money to do.

So which are you?

Spreadsheet together
or
One person handles it all?

When you’re managing money as a couple, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Some areas of your finances may stay separate, some may be shared, and some may simply need discussing together so you’re working towards the same goals.

That could include day-to-day budgeting, mortgage or household costs, emergency savings, protection and longer-term plans for the future.

The right balance will look different for every couple, but having open conversations can help you feel more organised, aligned and confident about what comes next.

If you’d like support reviewing your finances together, get in touch with Brancaster House Financial Planning.

You can share a life without sharing a financial plan, but it can make the big decisions much harder.

Who handles the finances in your relationship?

One of you may know exactly where every pension, policy and savings account is.

The other may be very happy to leave them to it.

That can work perfectly well day to day, but when it comes to bigger decisions like retirement, protecting your family or helping children financially, it helps if you are both working from the same plan.

In our latest article, we look at whether couples should plan their finances together and why having a shared understanding can make long-term decisions much easier.

A little preparation can make a financial review much more useful.
Before sitting down with your adviser, it helps to have the key information in one place, from pension and mortgage details to savings, investments and life insurance.

It’s also worth thinking about what’s changed since your last review, and whether you have any new goals or questions you want to discuss.

You don’t need to have everything perfectly organised. Having the basics to hand simply helps make the conversation clearer and more productive.

If it’s been a while since you last reviewed your finances, get in touch with Brancaster House Financial Planning.

Do your finances feel a little… scattered?

A pension here. Savings there. An old policy you vaguely remember setting up. Maybe an investment you haven’t looked at in a while.

It can quickly become a lot to keep track of.

The good news is, getting organised doesn’t mean sorting everything at once.

In our latest article, we share a few simple ways to bring your finances together, work out what actually needs attention and make the whole thing feel much more manageable.

Our newest team member is ready to make a splash… 🦆

Meet the Brancaster House duck, all dressed up and ready for the Great Yarmouth Duck Races 2026.

Organised by HR2 - A New Rotary Club for Great Yarmouth , the event is taking place at The Waterways on Sunday 20th September from 1pm, raising money for local charities.

We’ll be there cheering our duck on from the sidelines and, naturally, hoping for a very strong performance.

We’re feeling quietly confident.

The duck seems even more confident.

Now we just need one thing…

A name!

Drop your best suggestions in the comments. 🏁🦆
