MTD - making tax digital started on the 6 April and we’ve learned some lessons…

💻 44 MTD returns
💻 40 submitted
💻 4 didn’t quite make it over the line.

And actually, we’re pretty pleased with that.

For us, the introduction of MTD has always been about planning with clients. MTD isn’t really a tax problem. It’s a workflow problem.

Have there been issues? Yes.
Are we stressed about them? No.

The whole team has been all over it since October, working with clients, chasing information, sorting and training on software and trying to get every first quarterly submission over the line.

The four outstanding returns are now down to either clients not responding to us or software issues outside our control.

So, what have we learned from MTD quarter one?

👉 Record keeping may actually get worse in some cases.

At this point, can I please have the carrier bags of receipts back?

👉Software providers seem completely under-resourced.

The issues we’re raising must be the same ones accountancy firms across the country are dealing with every day, and getting timely support has been challenging.

👉The deadline clash makes very little sense.

We’re trying not to let our VAT-registered businesses down when they have the same deadline, while HMRC’s focus for these quarterly MTD submissions isn’t even on producing perfectly accurate figures at this stage.

Our biggest takeaway has been: Planning works.

40/44 first-quarter submissions completed, a team that has done absolutely everything it could, and no last-minute panic.

That's pretty incredible!

Great teamwork, lots of communication and, naturally, plenty of tea and biscuits.

Now onto the next quarter…
