Hospital trip with Dad this week.

At 85 his eyesight is fading, and last December he decided for himself that it was time to hand back his driving licence. For a man who has driven all his life, that was a big decision.
He learnt to drive when he joined the army. When he left, he became a lorry driver and stayed on the road until he retired. Then, rather than putting his feet up, he became a volunteer ambulance driver for the NHS and Macmillan. He only stopped when lockdown arrived in 2020. He was 79.

Today he reminded me that he retired 20 years ago. Twenty years!

I often say to clients that retirement isn't a finish line. For a lot of us, it's a whole chapter, sometimes decades long, and it changes shape as we go. Dad is living proof.

Today is World Financial Planning Day, and there's no better way to mark it than with a client's own words.

A second time around couple, aged 60 and 65, came to me wanting to get their affairs properly sorted. They're a blended family, both self-employed for most of their working lives, with several rental properties and building works to fund.

We looked at the whole picture: their income needs, how to pay for the building works, and how to protect both sides of the family. That meant looking back as well as forward. While their Wills were being put in place, we found that a former wife had never been removed from the title of one of their properties. They hadn't realised, so I put them in touch with someone who could help put it right.

Their Wills and trusts are now in place, and Lasting Powers of Attorney are under way.

It's not a subject anyone enjoys thinking about, especially in a blended family. But having someone who knows what they're doing, and treats you like people rather than a case file, makes all the difference.
