📢 Changes to accounts filings will come into effect on 1 April 2028.

An overview of what’s changing from 1 April 2028:

- all companies must file accounts digitally via software (iXBRL format)
- small companies and micro entities will need to file profit and loss accounts, but can opt-out of this being displayed on the public register – we’ll share details of the opt-out route in due course
- companies will no longer be able to file abridged accounts
- smaller technical changes, including updates to audit exemptions and accounting reference periods

If you are a landlord or sole trader who have not been captured by the first wave of HMRC's Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax initiative, which started in April 2026, it does NOT mean that you are permanently out of scope.

The income threshold for the first wave was set at over £50,000 but this is reduced to over £30,000 for the second wave - this will be used to determine who will be captured by MTD starting in April 2027 (tax year 2027/28).

What is The Making Tax Digital (MTD) Income Threshold?

Income is the total turnover from self-employment and property rental, before any expenses, deductions, or personal allowances are taken.

Your final reported income for tax year 2025/26 will be used to determine if you have fallen within scope.

If you are a landlord and /or sole trader earning over £50,000 a year then you are likely to be captured by HMRC's Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax initiative in tax year 2026/27. HMRC will use the income numbers from your 2024/25 tax return to determine if you have breached this threshold and hence captured by MTD.

Important Tax Dates To Be Aware Of - April

#06 # First day of the new tax year.

#19 # Deadline for final PAYE submission to be made for the tax year ended 5 April.

#19 # Deadline for the final postal payments of PAYE tax and Class 1 NICs for the previous tax year to reach HMRC.

#22 # Deadline for the final electronic payments of PAYE tax and Class 1 NICs for the previous tax year to reach HMRC.

#30 # After this date daily penalties will start to be charged in respect of any unfiled Self Assessment (SA) tax returns which were due on 31 January, i.e. 3 months previously.
