a little girl who loved maths at school who dreamt she could build an accounting firm she would have loved to work for through sharing free, accessible and consumable content to leave the world better than she found it 🥹

6 years later that accounting firm is a multi million pound business with the most incredible, values driven, independent businesses who I am so proud to call my clients. A team who amaze me, inspire me and cheer me on, every day in our Manchester and Oxford offices. A business which uses funds from my brand deals to support the Rachel Harris bursary scheme which funds and provides mentorship packages to those who want to become accountants but cannot afford to train, over the last 3 years we’ve supported 16 students to become accountants which is a legacy I am so proud of.

to all of the little girls (and boys) who love maths, let’s use maths to leave the world better than we found it 🤍

I said to James last night that Financially Confident is the proudest achievement of my career to date, even if one person signs up, I *know* that’s one persons life, changed forever with knowledge that no one will ever be able to take away from them.

I was a free school meal child who loved maths at school and became an accountant. I’ve spent my career watching brilliant people absolutely love their businesses but hate their numbers. I’ve watched capable business owners brought to tears over feeling like their finances are completely out of reach and disconnected from their lives. I’ve seen business owners feel like their business runs them and not the other way around..

Through qualifying as an accountant and getting my MBA, I built a framework to reverse engineer my own business backwards, from my personal goals for the year, into profit goals, revenue goals, and individual KPI’s for every employee inside my teams, so that every single person is working towards that goal.

I started following this process 5 years ago with one goal: can I pay my mortgage if I quit my job to become self employed? 3 years later the same process and the same business paid my mortgage off completely. I don’t say those things to flex, but as data points on the journey of a bootstrapped business owner with no external funding, no back up plan, no financial support.. a free school meal kid who understands how deeply your life (inside and out) can change, when you have the knowledge that for so long, has been gate kept from us.

We spend years qualifying as accountants only to be taught absolutely nothing about turning our skill into a business.

We are taught strategic tax planning and financial reporting standards but nobody hands you a chapter on how to lead a team. Or how to price your services without feeling sick and full of doubt. There’s no exam on managing clients, or creating your own KPIs, or growing a firm from you-at-a-laptop into something with actual people depending on it.

You qualify knowing the technical work inside out, and knowing almost nothing about running the business that the technical work sits inside.

I spent years wishing there was a place I could just ask.

Somewhere behind a closed door, away from clients and competitors and the pressure to look like you’ve got it all figured out, where practice owners could talk about the real stuff honestly. Pricing. Hiring. The bad days. Celebrating wins in a completely safe place.

I was a little girl who loved maths at school, who desperately wanted role models who felt like me, looked like me, and who loved maths as much as me, with jobs I aspired to have. I believe little girls (and boys!) can “be what they can see” and so whilst I didn’t have that, it makes my heart so full to hope that I can be that for others.

Creating content that helps you to grow, helps you to feel more confident, less anxious and more empowered whilst running your business is my goal with every single video. TW: infertility 🤍

This week is National Infertility Awareness Week and as someone who has always promised to use my voice for good, here goes.. 🦋

Our world and our life, for a long time, has been completely turned upside down by infertility. I think about it every hour of every day.

From the moment James & I met 10 years ago, we both knew we wanted a family. That future family has driven us to achieve amazing things, with a very clear goal in mind. We’ve built our businesses brick by brick, with our family in mind, so carefully planning from the very beginning to make sure we had this unique world where I could be a mommy and a business owner and love both.

Having such a public job whilst going through this journey has felt genuinely impossible at times & as we all know “you never know what someone else is going through” I wanted to pick some moments from the last few years to share what you did see online, vs what you didn’t see.

This is something that James & I have wanted to speak about for a long time but have struggled to find the words, the strength and the confidence to. Infertility awareness week felt like a good nudge and a reminder that there is strength is sharing in the hope that this helps someone too 🤍

To anyone, anywhere on this journey, I see you and I am sending all of the baby wishes to you too 💫
