Different signage. A familiar doorway. A place in our Oxford story.

These photographs show 6 St Aldate’s in two different chapters: an image from the Mathews Comfort archive alongside a recent view of our former premises.

Look closely and you’ll spot the Mathews Comfort name above the windows in the historic photograph. Today, the building has a different role, but its distinctive roofline is still recognisable.

Our financial-planning team moved to North Leigh in 2018. As we approach our 175-year celebration this November, we’re revisiting some of the places that have been part of the wider business’s history.

Swipe through for a closer look.

Do you remember Mathews Comfort at 6 St Aldate’s? We’d love to hear your memories.

A search bar makes finding a record easy. These index tabs did the same job in an earlier chapter.

As we approach our 175-year celebration this November, we’re taking a closer look at the small details in the Mathews Comfort archive.

A worn ledger, carefully arranged tabs and a paperclip holding records together offer a glimpse into the everyday work behind the business’s history.

Swipe through to explore a few of those details.

Do any bring back memories of your first workplace?

A proud moment for Emily and all of us at Mathews Comfort.

Earlier this month, Emily Corck won the Trailblazer Award for Innovation in Operations at the BOMS Awards 2026🏆

Good financial planning depends on the care and expertise of the whole team, including the work that happens behind the scenes. It’s lovely to see that contribution recognised.

Congratulations, Emily, and to everyone celebrated on the day. We’re delighted for you.

"I want to leave my kids something meaningful." Good. But not at the expense of your own future.

Here's the order that actually works:

First, get clear on what you need to fund your own lifestyle - for the rest of your life, not just the next few years.

Only then does gifting start to make sense.

And it doesn't have to mean one big lump sum. It could look like:
→ Smaller gifts, given over time
→ Help with a specific goal - a deposit, a wedding, a business
→ Support at the moments it'll matter most

If you want more say over how and when the money's used, trusts and other structures can help with that too.

None of this needs to be an either/or. Give generously, but from a position of knowing exactly what you can afford - not guessing.

That's how you support your children without ever putting your own security on the line.

Want to work out what you could comfortably gift without compromising your own plans?

Let's talk.

Every story has a first page. Ours began in Oxford in 1851.

This well-worn ledger is one of the objects in the Mathews Comfort archive. Its leather binding and gold lettering offer a glimpse into an earlier chapter of the business.

As we approach our 175-year celebration this November, we’re opening the archive to share some of the objects, places and people that have shaped our story.

It’s a chance to reflect on where we began, recognise those who have been part of the journey, and look ahead to what comes next.

96.6% of our clients say our planning gives them real peace of mind.

That's the number that matters most to us - more than any return, any forecast, any spreadsheet.

Because a good financial plan isn't just about the numbers. It's about how you feel about them.

It's the difference between checking your portfolio with dread and not needing to check it at all. Between lying awake wondering "what if" and knowing your plan already accounts for it.

Numbers can tell you where you stand. Peace of mind tells you you're going to be okay.

That's what we're really building, every time.

Want to know what real peace of mind could feel like for your finances? Let's have a conversation.

Market falls feel unsettling - but they've always been part of the journey.

Every long-term investor lives through them. The instinct is often to act fast - to pull money out, to feel like doing something is better than doing nothing.

But staying invested is usually what protects your long-term returns. It's what allows you to take part in the recovery, which is where a lot of that growth actually happens.

The strongest thing you can do in a downturn is stay calm, stay disciplined, and stay focused on the goals that haven't changed.

Feeling uneasy about recent market movement? Let's talk it through together.

Markets fall. That's not a sign something's wrong - it's a normal part of investing👇

When things drop, it's tempting to think about pulling your money out. But that often locks in losses and makes it harder to benefit when markets recover.

One of the strongest things you can do is stay focused on your long-term goals.

Ask yourself: has anything about your plans truly changed? If the answer is no, your strategy probably doesn't need to change either.

Having the right mix of investments and a sensible level of risk means your portfolio is already designed to handle downturns.

Staying invested allows you to take part in the recovery - and that's often where a lot of long-term returns are made.

Being calm and disciplined during difficult moments is one of the most powerful skills an investor can develop.

The decade before retirement: small decisions, lasting impact.

The years leading up to retirement carry more weight than any that come before them.
Not because you need to make big, dramatic changes - but because the small, deliberate ones start to compound.

Clarity on when you want to retire. A closer look at your pensions and investments. Debts cleared where possible. A cash reserve built up for the unexpected.

None of it needs to be rushed. It just needs to be intentional.

Ten years out and want to make sure your plan is heading the right way? Let's talk.

The decade before retirement matters more than any other. Here's how to use it well 👇

Those final 10 years before retirement can shape everything that comes after - which makes this the moment to bring real focus to your financial decisions.

Start with clarity: when do you want to retire, and what kind of lifestyle do you want once you get there?

Then look closely at your pensions and investments. Are you paying in enough? Are they invested in a way that matches your timeline and your appetite for risk?

This is also the time to think about clearing any remaining debts and building up a cash reserve for life's unexpected costs. And it's worth checking your State Pension record to fill any gaps while you still can.

The most helpful thing you can do is be intentional. The choices you make a decade out don't need to be dramatic - but they do need to be deliberate.

Each step brings you closer to a retirement that feels stable, secure, and genuinely enjoyable.
