Myth: "Accounting is just about tax."
Busted! It's easy to see why people think this. For many of us, the only time we look at our accounts is when a tax deadline is approaching, so accounting starts to feel like a yearly chore. But tax is only one small output of a much bigger picture.
Your accounts are really the story of your business, told in numbers. Used well, they can show you:
Your profit margins, so you know whether your prices are working
Your break-even point, so you know how much you need to sell to cover your costs
Which products or services earn their keep, and which are quietly costing you money
Whether you can afford to hire, invest in new equipment or take a well-earned holiday
When you only look at your numbers at tax time, you're looking backwards at what has already happened. When you look at them regularly, you can make better decisions while there's still time to act on them.
Try this: this week, take a look at your profit by product or service, not just the yearly total. You might be surprised by which parts of your business are doing the heavy lifting.
