There are certain things I see small-business owners do with their money that make me nervous.

Usually because nobody has ever shown them what they should actually be looking at.

You don’t need to become an accountant to make better financial decisions.

You need to understand the information you already have.

Follow for more practical business finance without the jargon.

Before you raise your prices, work out what each sale is actually leaving you with.

Say you charge £500 for a service.

Sounds good.

But if it takes you 10 hours to deliver, plus £80 of direct costs, that £500 isn’t £500 of profit.

And if your cheapest clients are also the ones taking the most time, raising your prices across the board might not even solve the real problem.

You need to know:

* what each sale contributes after its direct costs
* how much of your time it takes to deliver
* which clients or services leave you with the best return

Because the price on the invoice isn’t the same thing as what the business actually earns from the sale.

Follow for practical financial insight that helps you make better decisions about pricing, spending and growth.

You can make a profit and still have very little cash available.

That’s because profit and cash answer different questions.

Profit tells you whether the business has generated more income than expenses over a period.

Cash tells you what’s actually available in the bank right now.

And if you only look at your bank balance, you can make some very poor business decisions.

Follow for practical financial insight that helps you understand what your numbers are actually telling you.

Revenue is one of the easiest numbers to get excited about.

But it’s only one number.

If your revenue increases while your costs, workload and stress increase even faster, you haven’t necessarily built a better business.

Sometimes the goal isn’t simply more.

It’s knowing what is actually making you money - and what is costing you more than it’s worth.

Follow if you want practical financial insight to help you make better decisions about your business.

An extra £1,000 coming into the business sounds like good news.

But the interesting question isn’t simply:

“What should I spend it on?”

It’s:

“What would make the biggest difference to my business?”

More marketing isn’t automatically the answer.

Neither is more software, more staff or paying yourself more.

Good financial decisions start with knowing what your business actually needs.

Save this for the next time you have spare money sitting in the business.

You don’t have to want to sell your business for this question to matter.

If every decision lives in your head, you don’t know which clients are profitable, your pricing is based on guesswork and you can’t explain where the money goes…

You’ve created something that depends entirely on you.

And that’s very different from building a business.

The stronger your financial understanding becomes, the easier it is to make the business more predictable, transferable and valuable.

Follow if you’re interested in building a business, not just creating yourself a job.

“I’m having my best year ever.”

Maybe.

But I’d want to look beyond revenue before I’d agree.

Is profit increasing?

Are your costs under control?

Are you actually keeping any more money?

Has the extra revenue required significantly more of your time?

A business can be growing on paper while becoming less attractive.

Share this with a business owner who needs to hear it.

One of the strangest things about running a business is that your numbers can improve while you still don’t feel financially secure.

You can have more clients.

More revenue.

More work.

And still wonder where all the money has gone.

That’s why I care about more than whether your income has gone up.

You need to understand what you’re actually keeping, where it’s going and what’s worth your time.

If this sounds familiar, follow for more.

More clients isn’t always the answer.

If you’re already working flat out but not seeing much more money at the end of it, adding even more work may simply make the problem bigger.

I’d want to know:

* Which clients are actually profitable?
* Which work takes the most time?
* Which revenue produces the best return?

Because busy and profitable aren’t synonyms.

Save this before you decide you need more clients.
