Right, I'm going to say it.

A spreadsheet, even a very good, very elaborate, very colour-coded spreadsheet, is not a bookkeeping system. And trust me, I love a good spreadsheet!

Here's the thing: spreadsheets are genuinely useful tools. But they're manual, they're error-prone, they don't connect to your bank, they don't flag VAT issues, and they definitely won't submit a Making Tax Digital update to HMRC.

Dedicated bookkeeping software does all of that and it saves time in the process.

If you're still running your business finances through a spreadsheet, it might be worth having a conversation about what proper software could do for you.

Agree? Disagree? Tell me below — I can handle the debate.

Hands up if you've found a mystery transaction.

You're going through your bank statement and there it is.

A payment you don't recognise. An amount that doesn't match anything in your records. A company name that could be almost anything.

One mystery transaction is a puzzle. Several of them is a proper problem.

It happens more often than you'd think and usually it's something entirely innocent. A subscription that auto-renewed. A payment that hit on a different date than expected. An expense that got coded to the wrong account.

But you can only know that if you're regularly checking.

Reconciling your accounts consistently means these moments get sorted quickly, not discovered months later when the trail has gone cold.

Has a mystery transaction ever caused you a headache? I'd love to hear the story.

October, November, December.

Three months to close out the year on your terms.

Whether you're aiming to hit a revenue milestone, clear outstanding invoices, get your accounts in order, or simply finish the year with less financial stress than last time — Q4 is your window to make it happen.

So tell me: what's the one financial goal you're most focused on before the year ends?

Drop it in the comments — I'd love to hear what you're working towards.

Q4 starts in less than two weeks.

That means there are just three months left to hit your financial goals for the year — and right now is the best time to check in on where things stand.

Here's what I'd recommend reviewing before October arrives:

- Are your accounts fully reconciled?

- Have you reviewed your outstanding invoices?

- Is your PAYE up to date?

- Do you know roughly where you'll land on tax?

Most business owners don't look at these things until January. By then, the options are limited and the stress is very real.

Getting ahead of it now means no nasty surprises, and a much calmer end to the year.

If you'd like a Q4 financial health check, get in touch. Let's set you up for a strong finish.

Doing your own bookkeeping to save money is completely understandable.

But it's worth knowing what it actually costs you.

Time.

The hours you spend on your books are hours you're not spending on your clients, your team, or growing your business. For most business owners, that's an expensive trade-off.

Stress.

Bookkeeping isn't most people's favourite job (although it is mine!) The mental load of keeping on top of it, especially when things pile up, is a real drain.

Errors.

Without the right training, it's easy to miscategorise transactions, miss claimable expenses, or make mistakes that create problems further down the line.

Compliance risk.

Tax rules change. Keeping up with what's required takes ongoing attention that's hard to manage alongside running a business.

The businesses that grow fastest tend to be the ones that invest in the right support early, not because they can afford to, but because they understand the cost of not doing so.

If you'd like to explore what handing over your bookkeeping could look like, I'd love to chat.

It sounds like admin for the sake of it.

It isn't.

Bank reconciliation, matching your bookkeeping records to your actual bank statements, is one of the most important things you can do for your business finances.

Here's why it matters:

It catches errors before they become problems.

Duplicate charges, missed payments, or transactions that don't add up are all much easier to fix when spotted early.

It keeps your figures accurate.

Decisions made on inaccurate numbers are risky decisions. Reconciled accounts mean you can trust what you're looking at.

It makes tax time straightforward.

When everything is matched and accounted for, preparing your return is far less painful.

It gives you peace of mind.

Knowing your books reflect reality is worth a lot.

If your accounts haven't been reconciled in a while, now is a good time to sort it. We can help — just get in touch.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is already here for some and the next wave is closer than many people realise.

Let me clear up a few of the most common misconceptions.

"It doesn't apply to me."

If you're a sole trader or landlord with income over £30,000, MTD for Income Tax applies to you from April 2027. That's just over 6 months away, enough time to get prepared, but not enough time to keep putting it off.

"I'll just use a spreadsheet."

MTD requires compatible software that can submit quarterly updates directly to HMRC. A spreadsheet alone won't cut it.

"It's just the same as a tax return, done quarterly."

Not quite. It's a different process, quarterly updates plus a final declaration. The sooner you understand the difference, the smoother the transition will be.

"My accountant will handle everything."

We absolutely will, but we also need the relevant paperwork from you too.

Getting the right software and habits in place now will make April 2027 far less stressful.

If you have questions about what MTD means for your business, I'm happy to talk it through. No jargon, just clarity.

Your profit and loss looks healthy.

So why does your bank account tell a different story?

This is one of the most common and most confusing situations business owners find themselves in. And it comes down to the difference between profit and cash flow.

Profit is what's left after you subtract your costs from your income. Cash flow is the actual movement of money in and out of your account.

You can be profitable on paper and still struggle to pay your bills if your clients are slow to pay, your expenses hit before your invoices do, or you've got a big tax bill sitting quietly in the background.

Understanding both figures and the gap between them, is what gives you real visibility over your business.

If your numbers feel confusing right now, that's a sign it's worth having a proper look. Let's talk.

If you're not claiming everything you're entitled to, you're paying more tax than you need to.

Here are five expenses that often get missed:

1. Use of home as office.
Even if you work from home part of the time, you may be able to claim a proportion of your household costs.

2. Professional subscriptions.
Industry memberships, software licences, trade publications, if they're relevant to your work, they're likely claimable.

3. Training and development.
Courses, books, webinars directly related to your business? That's a legitimate expense.

4. Bank charges and interest. Often overlooked, but business banking fees and loan interest can usually be claimed.

5. Mileage for business travel. Not just client visits, any travel undertaken for business purposes. Keep a log and you could claim back a meaningful amount.

Missing even one of these regularly adds up over a year.

If you'd like a full review of your expenses, get in touch — it's worth the conversation.

There's something about September.

After the slower pace of summer, something shifts. The diary fills up. The inbox wakes up. And there's that familiar feeling of a fresh start — a bit like the first day back at school, but hopefully with better coffee.

If you're feeling that renewed energy right now, use it.

It's a brilliant time to set your intentions for Q4. What do you want to achieve before the year ends? What's been on the back burner that deserves your attention?

Getting clear on your numbers is a great place to start. When you know exactly where you are financially, you can make sharper decisions about where to go next.

Here's to a strong final quarter. What's your big focus for Q4?
