Peaceful thrill… or absolute nightmare? 🎈😅

There’s something strangely calming about watching hot air balloons drift across the sky. No noise. No rush. Just floating overhead.

Watching them from the ground? Amazing.

Getting into one myself? Absolutely not!

MTD for ITSA: “I thought HMRC had already signed me up...” 😅

Undersandably there is some confusion... being 'mandated' for MTD for ITSA means...“HMRC says you have to do this” It doesn't mean you're actually signed up for it. You have to sign up to be part of MTD for ITSA, it doesn't automatically happen. (Currently only sole traders and landlords turning over more than £50,000 a year are being mandated)

Your accounting software (hi Xero 👋) won’t fully connect until you're signed up for MTD.

The simple version:
Mandated = you legally need to do it
Signed up = you’ve actually done it

If you’re not sure where you stand, now’s a good time to check (before it turns into a last-minute scramble 🙃).

To sign up or see if you need to you can search 'sign up for MTD for ITSA' BUT make sure it's the official government website you're visiting. If you have an accountant they can also sign up on your behalf...😀

As much as I love bookkeeping and accounting (and I know that's sad to say 😅) I'm wondering if my real calling is actually latte art 😂. But is it a grizzly bear or a teddy bear? Either way it was a great start to the day 😂

What are your thoughts on walking pads...

So there's been an office upgrade...I've got a table top adjustable standing desk unit thingy (I doubt that is how it was actually marketed 😂) and more importantly a WALKING PAD 😀🎉. It's amazing, I now get 20,000 steps in a day, with some of that outside but a lot while I'm working...hopefully it's not drastically reduced the quality of my work 😂.

Just when I thought I wasn't creative..😂

Family fun night took the form of model making kits from this week. I tried to make a lion - results as seen 🙈😅. My wife is a super talented seamstress...she made the lady bird/bug - enough said. Our children are 17 and 14 years old so we should have 'out grown' clay models...but it was so much fun. There was a lot of laughing...at each other 😂.

Is joining an industry after a major shift a huge advantage...or being late to the party?

Accountancy has changed a lot in recent years! I very rarely deal with actual paper. I spend as much time working out how to fix clients’ software integrations as I do making sure their accounts are accurate. I spend meetings looking at how to streamline a company’s day-to-day processes so that they can get more insight into their finances with less effort. Cloud accounting software, AI, and technology in general have created a monumental shift in accountancy. But it’s the only accountancy I’ve known, as I’m relatively new to the industry. So perhaps it's time to update our mindset on what an accountant is, what they look like and what they do.

To me, being an accountant is partly about numbers — accurate, honest ones — but it’s mostly about people. It’s about problem-solving as part of their team… and it’s about emotionally supporting and encouraging them as they run their business. It’s why I love my job.

P.S. The picture is clearly not me...I will never be able to grow a beard or wear a baseball cap backwards 😂.

I felt like this sign was either mocking me or lacked commitment 😅

It's been a really busy work period recently for me and my wife (on top of trying to sort out housing 😅) so last Thursday it was great to go for a pub-style afternoon tea (courtesy of some great friends). The neon sign made me laugh though, it's obviously had a hard life...I don't think it even believes what it's saying anymore...
