🏢 Companies House identity verification – have you done yours?

Companies House identity verification is now a legal requirement for company directors and people with significant control (PSCs).

And this isn't just a future requirement — the first directors have now been prosecuted and fined for failing to comply.

In September 2026, the Insolvency Service secured its first convictions for identity-verification offences, with three directors receiving fines.

If you're a company director, you should:

✔️ Complete your identity verification
✔️ Keep your Companies House personal code safe
✔️ Provide your personal code when required

For existing directors, your personal code needs to be provided as part of your company's next confirmation statement.

⚠️ Don't leave it until your confirmation statement deadline.

If you're a company director or PSC and you're unsure whether you've completed the process or what you need to do next, get in touch with us and we'll be happy to help.

Is your company paying too much Corporation Tax? 💷

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is leaving their tax planning until their accounts are being prepared.

By then, some opportunities may have already passed.

Tax planning is most effective when you do it BEFORE your company’s year end.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be opportunities to consider things such as:

🔹 Capital expenditure and capital allowances
🔹 The timing of expenditure
🔹 Bonuses and remuneration
🔹 Pension contributions
🔹 R&D tax relief
🔹 Losses and other available reliefs

Every business is different, so the right planning will depend on your company's circumstances and what you're expecting your profits to be.

📅 If your company year end is approaching, don't wait until the accounts are done to think about Corporation Tax.

A review before your year end could help you understand your likely tax position and identify any planning opportunities while there's still time to act.

📩 Get in touch with us to discuss your Corporation Tax planning before your year end.

More estates could be liable for Inheritance Tax 💷

Inheritance Tax is no longer something that only the very wealthy need to think about.

The number of estates affected is expected to increase as a result of frozen tax thresholds, rising asset values and changes to the IHT rules.

One of the biggest upcoming changes is the treatment of pensions. From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be included when calculating the value of an estate for Inheritance Tax.

This means your potential IHT position could be affected by more than just your property and savings.

Tax planning can help you understand your potential liability and the options available to you. Planning ahead gives you more time to consider your position and take appropriate action.

📩 Could your estate be affected? Get in touch with us to discuss your Inheritance Tax position and the tax-planning opportunities available to you.

🏢 Companies House sign-in is changing

Companies House has announced changes to the way you sign in to the Find and update company information service.

From late August 2026, GOV.UK One Login will become the main sign-in option.

If you already have a Companies House account, you can continue using your existing login for now, but new users will need to use GOV.UK One Login. In time, all users will need to move across.

⚠️ One important point for businesses: if you currently share a Companies House account with someone else, it's worth reviewing how you access the account.

GOV.UK One Login is linked to one individual, using their own email address and phone number. Companies House advises that each person who needs access should have their own account. Sharing an account after it has been linked to GOV.UK One Login could result in users being locked out.

What should you do?

✔️ Check who currently has access to your Companies House account
✔️ Make sure your email address is up to date
✔️ If you share an account, consider setting up individual access

This change is about the sign-in process — it is separate from the Companies House identity verification requirements.

Are you a sole trader or landlord? 📩

The first mandatory Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly submission deadline has now passed — and nearly half of those expected to be in the first phase had not submitted their update.

The deadline was 7 August 2026. HMRC has reported that over 436,000 sole traders and landlords submitted their first update, compared to an estimated 864,000 taxpayers expected to be affected.

From September 2026, HMRC will begin automatically enrolling taxpayers who should be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax but have not registered themselves.

If you are a sole trader or landlord and your qualifying income from self-employment and/or property is over £50,000, Making Tax Digital may apply to you.

If you're affected, you'll need to keep digital records and submit regular updates to HMRC using compatible software.

We want to make sure our clients are aware of these changes and don't get caught out.

📩 If you are a sole trader or landlord and think this may apply to you, please get in touch with us. We can discuss your circumstances and help you understand what you need to do next.

Is Your Business Structure Still Right for You?

Businesses change, and so do tax rules. That's why it's worth reviewing your business structure from time to time to make sure it's still the best fit.

Whether you're a sole trader or run a limited company, the right choice can change over time. It's not a one-size-fits-all decision.

Things to consider include:

• Your profits
• Future growth plans
• Tax efficiency
• Personal liability and financial risk
• Administrative responsibilities
• How much flexibility you need

Many people assume that once they've become a limited company, there's no going back—but that's not always the case. Equally, if you're currently a sole trader, incorporating could offer benefits as your business grows.

A regular review can help ensure your business structure continues to work for you, not against you.

If you're wondering whether it's time to make a change—or simply want to understand your options—we're always happy to help.

Many business owners know they'll have a tax bill to pay, but finding the money when it's due can still be stressful.

A simple habit is to put aside a percentage of every payment you receive into a separate savings account.

That way, when your tax bill is due, the money is already there.
Planning ahead can make a huge difference to your cash flow and help avoid unwanted surprises.

Not sure how much you should be setting aside?

Get in touch—we're happy to help you plan ahead.

👑 Cash is King

It's a phrase you've probably heard before...

You can have plenty of sales and still run into trouble if the cash isn't coming into your business when you need it.

Here are three simple ways to keep your cash flow healthy:

💷 Invoice promptly – The sooner you send an invoice to customers, the sooner you can get paid.
⏰ Follow up overdue payments – A polite reminder can often make all the difference.
📊 Review your regular costs – Check subscriptions and recurring expenses to make sure you're only paying for what you need.

Healthy cash flow gives you the confidence to pay suppliers, invest in your business and plan for the future.

If you're worried about cash flow or want to better understand the financial health of your business, we'd be happy to help.
