πŸ“’ Autumn Budget 2026 : Five questions every business owner should be asking! πŸ“’

With the Autumn Budget just over two weeks away, it's not just about what the Chancellor might announce on 28 October; it's about how prepared your business is for what comes next.

At Tungsten Corporate Solutions, we believe successful businesses don't just react to change. They plan ahead.

So, here are five questions worth asking before Budget Day:

πŸ”Ή 1. Is your business as tax efficient as it could be?
Are you making the most of available allowances, reliefs and opportunities?

πŸ”Ή 2. How resilient is your cash flow?
Could your business absorb additional costs or changes to its tax liabilities?

πŸ”Ή 3. Are you planning to invest or expand?
Could changes to tax reliefs or investment incentives affect your plans?

πŸ”Ή 4. Is your business structured for the future?
Whether it's growth, succession or an eventual exit, is your current structure still right for you?

πŸ”Ή 5. Are your personal and business finances working together?
From remuneration and dividends to pensions and long term wealth planning, getting the balance right matters.

πŸ’‘ The Budget may change the rules, but good financial planning puts you in a stronger position whatever happens.

At Tungsten Corporate Solutions, we work alongside business owners to look beyond the numbers, identify opportunities and make informed commercial decisions.

πŸ“© Don't wait until Budget Day to start the conversation. Get in touch with the Tungsten team today.

πŸ“’ Autumn Budget 2026: What could it mean for you and your business? πŸ“’

With the Chancellor delivering the Autumn Budget on 28 October, business owners will understandably be watching closely to see what changes may be announced.

Taxation, investment, business costs and measures to encourage growth could all have an impact on the decisions businesses make over the months ahead.

At Tungsten Corporate Solutions, our message is simple:

Don’t wait for change; plan for it!

Now is a good time to review your business and personal financial position and consider whether there are any actions worth taking ahead of the Budget.

Once the Chancellor has spoken, we'll be cutting through the headlines and looking at what the announcements actually mean for business owners and, importantly, what action you may need to take.

If you'd like to discuss your current position or start planning ahead, speak to the Tungsten team.

πŸŽ‰ Happy Employee Ownership Month! A perfect timing to wrap up our EOT Education Series! πŸŽ‰

As we enter Employee Ownership Month this October, we’re delighted to have just completed our latest Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) Education Series at Tungsten Corporate Solutions.

The series has been a great opportunity to bring business owners and advisers together to explore what becoming employee owned really means. From completing the transaction; to creating a structure that works for the business, its employees and the exiting shareholders for the long term.

We’ve covered everything from EOT feasibility, valuation and funding through to governance, employee engagement and life after the transaction.

Employee Ownership Month is a great opportunity to celebrate the growing employee owned sector and to start conversations with business owners who may not yet have considered an EOT as part of their succession planning.

At Tungsten Corporate Solutions, we’re passionate about helping business owners understand all of their succession options and, where an EOT is the right route, supporting them throughout the journey.

Thinking about the future of your business? October might be the perfect month to start the conversation!

EOT Education Series: Our Success Story

For many business owners, succession planning feels like a choice between carrying on forever or walking away completely.

The reality is that there is another option.

At Tungsten Corporate Solutions, our Employee Ownership Trust has allowed directors to shape their own exit strategy, reducing involvement over a timescale that suits them while ensuring the business continues to thrive.

An EOT isn’t just for sole owners. It can work brilliantly for businesses with multiple shareholders, different retirement plans and different personal goals. One director may step back today, another in five years’ time. The structure provides flexibility while creating a clear succession plan for the future.

The real key to success? Having the right management team, leadership structure and people in place to take the business forward.

For us, employee ownership has been about creating options, protecting our culture and ensuring long term stability for our team and clients.

Succession planning doesn’t have to be an overnight event.

It can be a journey.

If you’re wondering whether an Employee Ownership Trust could work for your business, we’d be happy to share our experience.

EOT Education Series: What Happens to the Business Owner After an EOT?

An interesting feature of an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) is what often happens after the sale.

For many owners, an EOT is part of a genuine succession and retirement plan, rather than simply a transaction before moving on to start another competing business.

πŸ‘” A Gradual Step Back
An EOT doesn't necessarily mean the owner has to leave immediately.
Many owners remain involved for a period following the transaction, allowing them to gradually transfer knowledge, customer relationships and management responsibility to the next generation.

πŸ–οΈ A Route to Retirement
For an owner who has spent 20, 30 or even 40 years building a company, an EOT can provide a structured way to realise the value of the business and move towards retirement.

🀝 Passing the Business On
Rather than selling to a competitor and potentially seeing the company absorbed into another organisation, the owner can effectively pass the business on for the benefit of the employees who helped build it.

πŸ›‘οΈ Protecting What They've Created
For many EOT sellers, the motivation isn't simply financial.
Protecting the company's employees, culture, customers, independence and long-term future can form an important part of the decision.

And because the EOT is often part of a planned succession, the former owner is usually more focused on supporting the company's transition and eventually stepping away, rather than building a new competing business.

For some owners, an EOT isn't just a way to sell their business.

It's a way to finish one chapter, protect what they've built and hand it over to the next generation.

EOT Education Series: The Benefits of Preserving Company Culture

When a business is sold, it isn't only the ownership that can change.
The culture, values and identity built up over many years can change too.

One of the potential attractions of an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) is the opportunity to preserve what makes a business successful in the first place.

🏒 Protecting the Company's Identity
A sale to a third party can result in a new name, new systems, different priorities or integration into a larger organisation.

Employee ownership can help the business maintain its identity, independence and established way of working.

πŸ‘₯ Retaining the Right People
Culture can be a major reason why good employees stay.
Maintaining that culture following a change in ownership can help provide stability and reassurance, potentially supporting staff retention.

🀝 Maintaining Customer Relationships
Customers often value the people and personal service behind a business.
Keeping the existing team and culture can help maintain the relationships, service and trust that have developed over many years.

πŸ’‘ Protecting the Founder's Values
For many business owners, their company represents much more than its financial value.

An EOT can provide a succession route that helps protect the values, principles and working environment they have spent years creating.

🌱 Building on the Culture
Preserving culture doesn't mean preventing change.
Employee ownership can provide a stable foundation from which the next generation can develop and grow the business while retaining the values that made it successful.

A business can change ownership without necessarily changing what makes it special.

EOT Education Series: Is an EOT Really the Best Option?

Selling to a Competitor vs Selling to an EOT

An Employee Ownership Trust can be an attractive exit route but it isn't automatically the best option for every business owner.

So how does it compare with selling to a competitor?

πŸ’· Sale Price
A competitor or strategic buyer may be prepared to pay a premium because they can see additional value through synergies, market share, customers or cost savings.

An EOT transaction will normally need to be based on an independent market valuation and must be financially sustainable for the business.

πŸ’° Tax
A qualifying sale to an EOT can currently benefit from 0% Capital Gains Tax.
A sale to a competitor will normally be subject to CGT, although reliefs such as Business Asset Disposal Relief may be available depending on the circumstances.

🏦 How You Get Paid
A competitor may be able to pay more of the purchase price upfront.
With an EOT, part of the consideration is often deferred and paid from future profits, meaning the seller may receive their money over several years.

πŸ›‘οΈ Legacy & Independence
A competitor may restructure the business, integrate it into a larger organisation, change its name or make changes to the workforce.

An EOT can provide greater opportunity to preserve the company's identity, culture, employees and independence.

πŸ‘₯ Employees
A competitor buys the business for its own commercial objectives.
Under an EOT, the controlling interest is held in trust for the benefit of the employees, potentially improving engagement and providing access to qualifying tax free bonuses.

πŸ”„ Your Exit
A trade sale can potentially provide a cleaner and quicker exit.
An EOT can allow an owner to transition out gradually, remaining involved while responsibility passes to the existing or next generation of management.

So, which is better?

There isn't one answer.

A competitor sale may offer:
Higher headline price + more cash upfront + potentially faster exit.

An EOT may offer:
0% CGT + greater continuity + protection of your legacy + employee ownership + a more gradual succession.

The right question isn't simply: β€œWhich option gives me the highest sale price?”

It is: β€œWhich option gives me the best overall outcome for me, my employees and the future of the business?”

Tax treatment and EOT reliefs depend on the relevant qualifying conditions and individual circumstances.

EOT Education Series: What are the Benefits for Customers?

The benefits of an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) can extend beyond the business owner and employees. Customers can benefit too.

⭐ Better Customer Service
Employee owned businesses can create a stronger sense of responsibility and involvement amongst employees.

When employees have a greater connection to the long term success of the business, there can be an increased focus on customer satisfaction, service quality and maintaining strong relationships.

🀝 Continuity of Relationships
A sale to an external buyer can sometimes lead to changes in staff, management, systems or the way customers are looked after.

An EOT can provide greater continuity, helping businesses retain the people, knowledge and relationships that customers have come to rely upon.

🏒 Maintaining the Company's Values
For many customers, the culture and values of a business are part of the reason they choose to work with it.

Employee ownership can help preserve those values rather than seeing them potentially change following a sale to a competitor or external investor.

πŸ’‘ A Long Term Approach
With the business held for the benefit of its employees, there can be a greater emphasis on sustainable, long term success rather than short term returns.

And ultimately, a business with engaged employees, continuity and a long term outlook has the potential to deliver a better and more consistent experience for its customers.

Happy and engaged employees can help create happy and loyal customers.
