22 days to go until the first Making Tax Digital submission deadline!

If you're a sole trader or landlord using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, your first quarterly submission is due by 7 August.

Here's what you should be doing now:

✅ Make sure all your income and expenses are up to date.
✅ Check your bookkeeping is accurate and complete.
✅ Confirm you're using MTD-compatible software.
✅ Don't leave it until the last minute—submitting early gives you time to fix any issues.

Keeping on top of your records throughout the year makes tax time much less stressful.

📅 Get your tax return done by the end of July – your future self will thank you!

Many business owners put off their tax return until the last minute, but completing it by the end of July has some real advantages.

✅ Know exactly what your tax bill will be well in advance.
✅ Make sure your Payment on Account are based on your actual tax position. If your profits have changed, filing early could reduce the amount you're asked to pay.
✅ Give yourself time to budget and avoid any nasty surprises.
✅ Skip the stress of the January rush.

The sooner your tax return is completed, the sooner you have clarity on what you owe and can plan your finances with confidence.

If you need help getting your accounts and tax return ready, get in touch. I'd be happy to help.

Today, on Armed Forces Day, I'm taking a moment to recognise and thank all those who serve, have served, and the families who support them every step of the way.

As a bookkeeper, I know the value of dedication, commitment, and service. Those qualities are embodied every day by the men and women of our Armed Forces. This day is especially meaningful to me as I have Armed Forces personnel and veterans in my own family, giving me a personal appreciation of the sacrifices made both at home and abroad.

Thank you to all serving members, veterans, reservists, cadets, and military families for your contribution and commitment.

Wishing everyone a proud and reflective Armed Forces Day 2026.

I’ve attached an image but there’s a link to some other options here if you’d like something else.

Thanks

Hello!

Here’s the beer one. If you have a pic of you with a pint on your hols, even better. I’m having some time off next week too so I’m sending you this one early.
Here’s a fun fact for you on. National Beer Day 🍺

That pint you're enjoying doesn't just contain hops, malt, and water, it also comes with a healthy serving of tax!

Between alcohol duty and VAT, the taxman gets a sip of nearly every pint sold in the UK.

I'll drink to accurate records and properly reconciled accounts! 🍻

If you need some help navigating your business finances, I currently have some limited availability.

Here’s a quick reminder for anyone who completes a Self Assessment tax return...
If you haven't submitted your 2025/26 tax return yet, it's worth thinking about getting it done before the end of July rather than leaving it until January.

Why?

✅ You'll know exactly what your tax bill is well in advance.
✅ If you're required to make Payments on Account, getting your return completed early means those figures will be based on your actual income as soon as possible. If your profits have fallen, you may be able to reduce future payments and avoid paying more tax upfront than necessary.
✅ It gives you plenty of time to budget and plan for any tax due, rather than facing a surprise after Christmas.

And this year there's another important reason...

📢 Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is now on the horizon, with more self-employed individuals and landlords preparing for the new reporting requirements. As we move closer to implementation, it's more important than ever to have accurate, up-to-date records and understand your tax position early.

Leaving everything until January often creates unnecessary stress, rushed bookkeeping, and missed planning opportunities. Getting organised now means more time to plan, fewer surprises, and a much smoother path into the new MTD era.

If you'd like help getting your books up to date or preparing your Self Assessment return, feel free to get in touch, I do have limited availability at the moment.

Happy World Milk Day! 🥛
Did you know that milk, tea and coffee provided for employees in the workplace are generally tax-free benefits in the UK? That means businesses can usually claim them as allowable staff welfare expenses without creating a benefit-in-kind charge for employees.

Keeping the team fuelled with a proper brew isn’t just good for morale, it can be tax-efficient too ☕

Need help understanding what your business can and can’t claim? Get in touch for friendly bookkeeping and tax support.

Your business can be profitable on paper… and still struggle to pay the bills.

Here’s why:

📊 Profit is what’s left after expenses are deducted from sales.
💰 Cash flow is the actual money moving in and out of your bank account.

Example:

You send a £5,000 invoice in May.
That counts as profit in May.
But if the client doesn’t pay until July, you don’t actually have the cash yet.

So while your accounts may show a healthy profit, your bank balance could tell a very different story.

That’s why business owners need to track BOTH profitability and cash flow

Because cash is what keeps the business running day to day. If you need any support then reach out to me and see if I can help make running your business a little easier.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a reminder that money worries don’t just affect bank balances, they affect sleep, relationships, confidence, and overall wellbeing too.
For many people, financial stress can feel overwhelming: unpaid invoices, rising costs, tax deadlines, cash flow worries, or simply not knowing where things stand financially. You’re not alone in feeling that pressure.

As a bookkeeper, my role is about more than spreadsheets and receipts. It’s about helping bring clarity, control, and peace of mind back to your finances. When your accounts are organised and you understand your numbers, it becomes easier to make decisions, plan ahead, and reduce that constant financial anxiety.

Whether it’s:

✔️ Keeping your bookkeeping up to date
✔️ Helping you stay prepared for tax deadlines
✔️ Managing cash flow more effectively
✔️ Giving you clearer financial visibility
✔️ Taking admin stress off your plate.

Small steps can make a big difference to your mental wellbeing. This Mental Health Awareness Week, remember: asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. You don’t have to carry financial stress on your own, let’s have a free chat about how I can help https://www.sarahsbookkeepingservices.co.uk💚
