VAT registration isn’t just doom and gloom. Here’s what nobody talks about 👇

✅ You can reclaim 20% VAT back on your business expenses - software, equipment, accountancy fees, the lot

✅ That VAT number on your invoice signals turnover. Clients assume you’re doing serious numbers

✅ Selling to other businesses? They claim the VAT back anyway - it’s a non-issue for them

✅ Just registered? You can reclaim VAT on goods bought up to 4 years ago and services up to 6 months ago - if you’ve still got them and kept the invoices

✅ The Flat Rate Scheme can mean you pay HMRC less than you collected - and pocket the difference (sector and spend dependent - ask your accountant)

✅ Quarterly returns force you to stay on top of your numbers. Most business owners who do this actually understand their finances better

The admin is real. But so are the upsides.

You’ve decided to back yourself. Employed to self-employed. Job to business. That’s a level up.

Here’s what you actually need to know before the money starts moving:

🧾 Register with HMRC – you must register as self-employed if you earn over £1,000 from self-employment in a tax year. The deadline is 5 October after the tax year you started trading. Miss it and penalties follow.

🧾 Trading Allowance – the first £1,000 of self-employment income is completely tax-free and doesn’t need reporting. Go over that and you need to register for Self Assessment.

🧾 What’s Allowable – expenses must be “wholly and exclusively” for business. Subscriptions, equipment, travel, marketing, professional fees. Keep receipts for everything from day one.

🧾 National Insurance – Class 2 is no longer compulsory. Class 4 kicks in on profits above £12,570 at 6%, dropping to 2% above £50,270. It’s calculated through Self Assessment — but budget for it because it catches people out.

🧾 Payments on Account – once your tax bill hits £1,000, HMRC asks for next year’s tax in advance. Your first Self Assessment can feel like a double hit. It isn’t a mistake. Plan for it.

🧾 VAT – turnover over £90,000 in a rolling 12 months and you must register. Below that it’s optional — sometimes worth it, sometimes not, depending on your customers and costs.

🧾 Separate Bank Account – not legally required, but practically essential. Mixing personal and business money creates problems. Every accountant’s nightmare.

🧾 Set Aside Tax From Day One – 20–30% of every payment into a separate pot. Don’t touch it. Don’t wait until January.

The business is the level you just passed. Running it properly is the one you’re on now.

Any questions, send us a message.

Every tax year, these allowances reset. Don’t use them, and they’re gone - no nudge from HMRC, no rollover, no second chance.

💷 Pension Annual Allowance - contribute up to £60,000 (or 100% of your earnings, whichever is lower) and get full tax relief. One of the most powerful wrappers available.

💷 ISA Allowance - put up to £20,000 into an ISA this year and any growth, interest, or dividends inside it are permanently sheltered from tax.

💷 Personal Allowance - £12,570 of income before a penny of income tax is due. Tapers away above £100k.

💷 Marriage Allowance - if one partner doesn’t use their full personal allowance and neither pays higher-rate tax, transfer £1,260 to the other and save up to £252 in tax.

💷 Rent a Room - let out a furnished room in your own home (you must be living there) and the first £7,500 is tax-free. Halves to £3,750 if someone else also receives the rent.

💷 Capital Gains Allowance - realise up to £3,000 of investment or asset gains each year without triggering CGT. Also doesn’t roll over.

💷 Starting Rate for Savings - if your non-savings income is below £17,570, you could earn up to £5,000 in interest completely tax-free on top of everything else.

💷 Dividend Allowance - the first £500 of dividend income outside an ISA or pension is tax-free. It’s been cut 90% since 2018, so this one really does matter.

💷 Trading Allowance - earn up to £1,000 from side income or casual self-employment and it falls outside the tax system entirely. Over that and you’ll need to report it.

💷 Property Allowance - gross rental income below £1,000? No tax, no return required. Can’t be combined with Rent a Room on the same property.

If any of these apply to you and you’re not sure how to use them, that’s what we’re here for. Find us at Darna Financial Services

HMRC is changing how self-employed people report tax… and the classic “January panic tax return” might finally be over 😅

Making Tax Digital is coming in 2026 for many self-employed people and landlords. If you earn over £50k, you’ll likely need to send quarterly updates to HMRC using software.

Get ahead of it now instead of scrambling next January.
