There is something oddly satisfying about closing off a full year of accounts, even if the process itself involves digging through bank statements and receipts from March. The key is not leaving it to the last minute in September when your nine-month deadline suddenly feels urgent. Starting early means fewer panicked spreadsheet nights and a clearer picture of how your business actually performed.

Many directors think auto-enrolment only kicks in once you've hired your first employee. In reality, if you're a director with earnings above the lower earnings limit, you're a worker too and must be enrolled in a qualifying scheme. You can't simply opt yourself out because you're the owner. It's a common oversight that can land you with penalty notices from the Pensions Regulator.

If you're a limited company director, you cannot simply withdraw money whenever you need it the way a sole trader can. Any money you take out should either be salary (through PAYE), a dividend (from available profits), or a loan to the company. Taking cash without documenting it properly can lead to problems with HMRC and complications in your accounts. Keep a clear record of how money moves between you and your company.

One of the most common issues we see with new limited company clients is an untracked Director's Loan Account. Every personal transaction through the company needs recording, and getting it wrong can create unexpected tax charges at year end. If you're not sure where your DLA stands, it's worth checking before your accounts are due.

Many small business owners think VAT registration is optional until they hit the threshold.

In fact, you can register voluntarily below the threshold, which is often worth doing if your customers are VAT registered businesses. They can reclaim your VAT, so they may prefer working with registered suppliers.

Voluntary registration also lets you reclaim VAT on purchases immediately rather than waiting.
