Business is getting more digital.
Is yours?

HMRC's direction of travel is becoming pretty clear:

More data
More digital systems
More real-time reporting
And potentially more frequent tax payments

Mandatory e-invoicing is being worked towards from 2029, primarily for VAT invoices covering business-to-business and business-to-government transactions.

2029 might sound a long way away, but if you're still relying heavily on manual bookkeeping and invoicing, why wait?

Getting good systems in place now can make future changes much easier to deal with.

Do you know what a healthy cashflow looks like?

Shock...
It doesn't mean having thousands sitting in the bank...

It means:

✔️ Bills that are paid on time
✔️ Wages are covered
✔️ Tax bills that don't come as a surprise
✔️ Being able to invest in your business with confidence
✔️ A slow month that doesn't cause you panic

Healthy cashflow is less about being rich and more about having control.

How would you rate your business's cashflow right now...
Drop a number out of 10 in the comments below!

If there was one number you were allowed to know about your business today, what would it be?

💷 Your bank balance?
📈 Your gross profit?
📊 Your cashflow?
📋 Your outstanding debtors?

There isn't a single right answer.

But if you don't know any of them, you're making decisions without knowing the full picture.

So, which number do you check first?

The businesses that hit the ground running in September are usually the ones that started planning in August.

We always find September and January are when clients and businesses push on, often they have had a holiday or different routines, so have a fresh perspective and new ideas... It's usually not at the end of the tax year or start of the new tax year like most people often think.

So now's the time to ask yourself if you know whether:

✅ You're on track to hit your goals for the year?
✅ You've chased outstanding invoices?
✅ What work is coming in?

The last few months of the year have a habit of flying by.

A little planning now can make a big difference by December.

The kicks off today...
Give Self Assessment stress the red card!

Filing your tax return early means you can:
📅 Find out what you owe earlier, so you can plan ahead
💷 See if you’ve overpaid tax and arrange your refund
😮‍💨 Avoid last-minute stress

Filing now means the hard bit is over - the payment deadline remains 31 January 2027 - so you'll still have lots of time to spread out your payments.

Get ahead and send your tax return off early for peace of mind this weekend.

The numbers in your business today are important.
But so is having a plan for where you want your business to be in five or ten years' time.

Every successful business starts with someone willing to take a chance and the bigger picture is rarely built overnight.

It's built through the small decisions.
The long days.
The lessons learned.
And the consistent effort that compounds over the years.

So here's to every entrepreneur who's taken the leap, and to those who've paved the way before us.

With a slower pace, for some, treating August like it's your business's annual service has some great benefits to offer you.

Do you know the answers to the following:

✅ Is my cashflow healthy?
✅ Have my costs crept up?
✅ Am I making the profit I expected?
✅ Do I know what the rest of the year looks like?
✅ Are my outstanding invoices under control?

Just like a car, it's often the small checks now that will avoid bigger problems later.

When was the last time you gave your business an MOT?

It's the question every accountant gets asked...
"Can I claim it?"

The honest answer?
It depends.

Whether an expense is allowable often comes down to the nature of your business and why the expense was incurred.

For example, a hard hat and high-vis clothing are likely to be an allowable expense for a builder.

For an accountant? Probably not.

That's why there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to business expenses.

If you're ever unsure, it's always worth asking before you claim.

What's the strangest expense you've heard someone deliberating over whether they can claim or not?

Did you know around 10% of people are left-handed?
(Including Anne, and she always notices other left handers!)

Whether you're left-handed or right-handed, every business owner thinks differently.

Some love spreadsheets and forecasts.
Some prefer big ideas and seeing the bigger picture.
Some make decisions from the data.
Others trust experience and instinct.

The strongest businesses usually have a bit of both.

So, which one are you?

💡 Ideas first

Here's our top 3 things that every accountant wishes their clients did more of...

1️⃣ Keep records up to date
Not six months later. Not in a carrier bag. Little and often makes life much easier.
Plus it's so much easier if you've gone digital!

2️⃣ Ask questions
If you do not understand something, ask.
There really is no such thing as a silly question.

3️⃣ Tell us when something changes
New business? New employee? New premises?
The sooner we know, the better we can help.

This doesn't just make an accountant's life easier...

You actually have up to date data that gives you an accurate reflection on how the business is doing, which means you can make better decisions!

What would you add to the list?
