Bookkeeping is one of those things that often gets left until it becomes a problem.

We see a lot of business owners trying to squeeze it in around everything else - evenings, weekends, whenever there’s a spare hour. And it works… until it doesn’t.

Because good bookkeeping isn’t just about staying up to date. It’s what gives you a clear picture of what’s actually happening in your business, day to day. Without it, everything else becomes harder.

That’s why more and more businesses are choosing to outsource it. It frees up time, reduces stress, and means you’ve actually got numbers you can rely on.

And for us, it’s something we’ve really invested in. Debbie Bridle and Lynda Dorks have been doing a brilliant job supporting our clients, and with Louise Maddocks now part of the team as well, we’ve got even more capacity to help businesses stay on top of things properly.

If bookkeeping is something that keeps slipping down the to‑do list, it might be time to take it off your plate altogether.

Over 100,000 people could already be behind on MTD… are you one of them?

Recent figures suggest that around 111,000 taxpayers who need to register for Making Tax Digital (MTD) from April 2026 still haven’t done so.

And the reality is… many won’t realise it applies to them yet.

👉 From April 2026, if your combined self-employment and rental income is over £50,000, you’ll need to follow MTD rules
👉 That threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028

This isn’t just a small tweak to Self Assessment.
It’s a shift to digital record-keeping and quarterly submissions - which can feel like a big change if you’re not prepared.

The good news? There’s still time to get set up properly - and avoid last-minute stress.

We’ve pulled together three simple MTD packages, depending on how much support you need - from getting you started with the right software, through to a fully managed service.

Take a look at our packages to see what’s included in each tier.
If you’re not sure which option is right for you, feel free to get in touch - we’re happy to talk it through 😊

There comes a point where “they file things on time” just isn’t enough anymore.

As businesses grow, what they need from their accountant changes. It’s no longer just about staying compliant, it’s about really understanding what’s going on behind the numbers.

Where is the profit actually coming from? What is the cashflow really telling you? Does the current structure still make sense? And what’s coming next that you should be thinking about now?

For a lot of business owners, the issue isn’t that anything is being done wrong. It’s just that the business has moved on… and the advice hasn’t quite kept up.

If your business looks very different to how it did three years ago, it’s worth asking whether your financial support has grown with you.

If that feels familiar, it’s probably something we should talk about.

Over the past few weeks, we've had the pleasure of welcoming three fantastic work experience students to Elsby & Co – Casper Emery, Jamie Gwynne and Isaac Dutch.

Work experience is something we take seriously. Rather than simply offering students a week in the office, we've developed a recruitment process that mirrors the experience candidates go through when applying for a role with us. This includes a phone screening interview, followed by a group activity designed to assess collaboration and problem-solving skills before successful candidates are offered a place on the programme. As Jamie Gwynne noted, the interview process gave him valuable insight into "how professional interviews are run" and was "an eye opener" to the recruitment process.

Once they join us, we aim to provide a genuine insight into life at an accountancy firm. Students spend time with teams across admin, marketing, bookkeeping, payroll and accounts, helping them understand not only what accountants do, but also the many other roles that keep a business running successfully.

The feedback we've received makes all the effort worthwhile.
💬 "The work experience has significantly helped me to decide on my future career... it has also showed me so many more jobs in accounting that I didn't even know existed." – Jamie Gwynne
💬 "Overall, my experience at Elsby & Co has been really amazing... it has given both insight into accounting and also how much it takes to have a business running efficiently and effectively." – Isaac Dutch

For us, that's exactly what work experience should do: open doors, create opportunities and help young people make informed decisions about their future careers.

A huge thank you also goes to Ann Phillips, who works tirelessly behind the scenes to organise and coordinate our work experience programme. From managing the recruitment process to creating a welcoming and well-structured experience for every student, Ann plays a huge role in making the programme the success that it is. Her dedication shines through in the feedback we receive year after year.

Thank you, Casper, Jamie and Isaac, for bringing so much enthusiasm and curiosity during your time with us. We wish you every success in whatever path you choose next.

This is one of those things that tends to creep up quietly…

A tax bill sits there for a bit longer than planned. Cash is tied up elsewhere. It gets pushed to next month, then the month after.

And then HMRC adds another penalty on top.

At this stage, it’s usually an extra 5% on what’s still unpaid - on top of anything that’s already been charged. It can add up quickly, especially when it wasn’t part of the plan in the first place.

It’s never really about anyone choosing not to pay - it’s just how easy it is for these things to slip.
But the longer it’s left, the more it costs.

If you’ve got something outstanding or you’re worried about keeping up with payments, it’s always better to tackle it early and have a plan in place.

Don't bury your head in the sand, get in touch and we can help you.

What should you actually expect from your accountant?

It’s a simple question - but one we don’t think gets talked about enough.

At Elsby & Co, we often meet businesses who feel like they’re “getting the basics”… but not much more. Deadlines are met, numbers are filed - but there’s no real sense of support, insight, or partnership.

And that’s where standards matter.

For us, it’s not just about doing the job. It’s about how it’s done.

But what does that look like in practice?
✅ Clear, honest communication
No jargon. No confusion. Just straightforward conversations so you always understand what’s happening and why.

✅ Proactive advice
Not just reporting the past but helping you plan ahead, spot opportunities, and avoid problems before they arise.

✅ Consistency you can rely on
From day-to-day queries to bigger strategic conversations, you get the same level of care and attention every time.

✅ A team that genuinely cares
We’ve built our approach around helping our clients - not just servicing them. That mindset is what drives everything we do.

✅ Standards that match the best
Whether it’s audit, tax, or advisory work, we follow the same professional standards you’d expect from larger firms - delivered in a way that’s personal and accessible.

Because ultimately, good accountancy isn’t just about compliance. It’s about giving you confidence and helping you make better decisions, and it’s about knowing you’ve got the right people in your corner as your business grows.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re getting the support you should be, it might be time to ask that question. We're always happy to have a conversation - no pressure, just a chat.

We recently sat down with Carina Benzie ACCA to ask what’s coming up most in conversations with clients right now.

Her answer was simple: cash flow.

But not always in the way you might expect.

Carina shared that she’s seeing a mix of challenges:
• Businesses growing quickly and needing more control
• Customers becoming more cautious with spending
• Business owners wanting clearer visibility of what’s ahead

Her biggest insight?
“It’s not just about having the numbers anymore – it’s about understanding them early enough to act on them.”

She talked about one client who’s moved onto monthly management accounts. Now instead of reacting after the event, they’re:
✔️ Presenting up-to-date figures to their board
✔️ Getting a clear picture of performance month by month
✔️ Making more confident decisions as they grow

And because we already support them with bookkeeping, payroll and tax, it means we can see the full picture and advise in a much more joined-up way.
That clarity has supported their growth – even expanding into the UAE.
A really good reminder that cash flow isn’t just about managing risk – it’s about enabling the next step.
