Claim a tax refund in minutes!

For most PAYE customers, refunds are no longer issued automatically by cheque. Employees now need to take action to receive any money they are owed.

Last year, more than 730,000 tax refunds went unclaimed, with an average value of £855.

Employees should:

check the HMRC app or their Personal Tax Account (PTA) to see if they are due a refund
claim their refund online if prompted
make sure their personal details are up to date with both their employer and HMRC
Employees can check and update their details, including their postal address, in the HMRC app or their Personal Tax Account. Having the correct details helps make sure important letters and payments are not delayed.

How employees can claim
Open the HMRC app or sign in to their PTA.
Go to ‘Pay As You Earn (PAYE)’.
Look for a green ‘Claim’ button, if a refund is due.
Select ‘Claim’ to request the refund.
Refunds are normally made by bank transfer within one week.

Payroll Updates from April 2026

HMRC have announced some changes affecting payroll that apply from April 2026, see below for further information and how they may affect you or your business.

Statutory Sick Pay: More employees qualify, with no earnings threshold and no three-day waiting period.

Day-one family leave: Employees are entitled to Paternity Leave and Unpaid Parental Leave from the first day in a new job.

Bereaved Partner’s Paternity Leave: New right to time off following the death of a child’s mother or primary adopter.

Holiday pay records: Employers are required to keep adequate records to show they have complied with holiday pay and entitlement rules. These records need to be retained for 6 years from the date they were made.

Watch out for a new email scam purporting to be from HMRC.

A scam which tries to get around 2 factor authentication
A call purporting to be from O2 saying that there was a special offer and they explained that a text would come through with the “promotional code”. Sure enough , a code came through, but this was an authentication code, which is sent if you lose access to you phone etc. they had tried to gain access to the phone ( or account) and called her phone to ask for the access code sent in a text message. ( the text message does say NOT to reveal to anyone else, but when you are out, relaxing, it can seem innocuous). The point of this rambling message is DO NOT give the detail of any text message and code to anyone cold calling you….
If in any doubt , challenge the caller, and they will probably hang up !
