I've been reading Accrual Intentions by Alexis Kingsbury lately - and honestly, it's been one of those books that keeps making me stop and think.

It's ostensibly about accounting. But the themes that have stayed with me most are about critical thinking - how we question what we're told, how we interrogate data, and how we avoid just accepting outputs at face value.

And as someone who's been working through an AI operationalisation course recently, that couldn't feel more timely.

AI is brilliant. I use it, I advocate for it, and I genuinely think it changes what's possible for small businesses. But it also requires you to think harder, not less. To ask better questions. To know when something doesn't add up.

That's where my ex-auditor brain comes in - and honestly, I've never been more grateful for it. Audit trained me to question everything. To not just accept a number because it looks right. To follow the thread until I understand what's actually underneath it.

That skill matters more now than it ever did.

If you're a business owner navigating AI tools and wondering how to use them well - this one's worth your time.

We're halfway through the year already. So - how are your finances actually looking?

Not the polished version you'd tell someone at a networking event. The real version.

Are you making the profit you expected? Is cash flow healthy, or does it feel like money's coming in and quietly disappearing? Are your prices still working, or have costs crept up while your rates stayed the same? And do you know what tax bills are heading your way before the year's out?

A quick honest look now is so much better than a nasty surprise in December.

If you'd like a hand with that, you know where I am. 🐵

There’s a good chance you’re paying more tax than you need to. Not because you’ve done anything wrong - just because nobody told you what you can actually claim.

Software. Travel. Training. Office costs. The list is longer than most limited company directors realise.

I help clients find these things all the time. And every time, the reaction is some version of: “Wait, I could have been claiming that all along?”

If you’re not sure what counts as an allowable expense - drop me a message.

It’s one of those conversations that tends to pay for itself pretty quickly. 🐒

Two years ago, a food business owner came to me. They’d just gone viral on social media, a pop-up shop opportunity had landed in their lap, and they were absolutely flying.

But underneath the buzz? They weren’t VAT registered. The finances hadn’t kept up with the momentum. And paying themselves properly wasn’t something that had happened yet.

So we sorted the foundations. Got the systems in place. Built the kind of structure that could actually support a growing business - not just the one they were running now, but the one they were clearly heading towards.

Fast forward two years. They’ve got a permanent brick and mortar shop.

They’re attending events like the Isle of Wight Festival and the Windsor Light Show. Turnover is approaching half a million. And they’re in the process of selling their first franchise.

I’m actually moving them on to a larger firm now - because they’ve outgrown me. And I couldn’t be prouder of that sentence.

This is exactly what I’m here for. Not to hold on to clients forever. To get the foundations so solid that one day they don’t need me anymore.

That’s not losing a client. That’s the whole point. 🐒

Is your business growing faster than your finances can keep up with? Let’s talk.

Who do I work with? The honest answer: people, not just businesses.

Specifically - business owners who are building something. A start-up finding its feet. A growing business that’s outgrown winging it. A company ready for its next big step.

Some come to me because the numbers are piling up and they need to feel in control. Others want proper strategic support - someone in their corner who actually thinks about their business between calls.

What they tend to have in common: big ideas, big goals, and quite possibly a slightly chaotic spreadsheet. 🐒

If that sounds like you, a free Grooming for Growth call is the place to start.

Should I be a limited company? It’s one of the most common questions I get asked - it deserves a proper answer.
The potential upsides are real. Limited liability, stronger credibility, a structure that can support growth. But so are the trade-offs - more admin, higher accounting costs, more responsibility.

The right answer depends entirely on where your business is now and where you want it to go.

That’s exactly the kind of conversation I love having. Book a free Grooming for Growth call and let’s work it out together.
