A little behind-the-scenes from this side of the laptop. 🌊

People imagine accountants buried in spreadsheets under fluorescent lights, but down here, my office often comes with a sea view.

The truth is, I do this because I love the people part: helping a nervous first-time sole trader breathe again, untangling someone’s holiday let return, watching a small business finally feel in control of their numbers.

Spreadsheets are just how I get there. ā˜€ļø

What does a day in your business look like? Tell me below šŸ‘‡

Hot take: the best time to deal with your tax return is right now, in the sunshine. ā˜€ļøšŸŒŠ

I know, January feels miles off. But that’s the whole point. Sorting your return now means:

🌊 You know exactly what you owe (no nasty surprises)
🌊 Time to spread the cost before the deadline
🌊 A completely panic-free Christmas and New Year

While everyone else is leaving it ā€˜til the last minute, you could be the smug one with it all done by autumn. Future you will be very grateful.

Want to get ahead this year? My books are open - drop me a message.

POV: you stopped trying to do it all yourself.

There’s a very specific kind of calm that comes from knowing your tax is handled, no late-night spreadsheet sessions, no ā€œis this an expense?ā€ spirals at 11pm.

That feeling? Completely available to you.

Send this to the business owner in your life who’s still doing it the hard way.

Hello to any new faces around here!

I’m Natalie, Cornwall accountant, plain-English enthusiast, and firm believer that doing your tax shouldn’t feel like sitting an exam you didn’t revise for.

I work with small businesses, the self-employed and holiday let owners across Cornwall who want to actually understand their numbers- not just hand them over and hope for the best.

If ā€œwarm, calm and jargon-freeā€ sounds like the accountant you’ve been looking for, give me a follow or drop me a šŸ‘‹ in the comments.

Popping this in your feed before it sneaks up on you.

If you make payments on account, your second one for 2025/26 is due by 31 July. It's usually half of last year's tax bill, paid in advance, so no nasty surprise, just a date to have in the diary.

Two quick things worth knowing:
- If your income this year is lower than last year, you may be able to reduce the payment - but it has to be done before the deadline.
Paying late means interest starts adding up from 1 August, so it's worth a calendar nudge.

Not sure if this applies to you, or whether you should reduce it? That's exactly the kind of thing I'm here for, message me anytime.

DM if you want to check or reduce your payment.

Just started your business? Firstly congratulations. Secondly- breathe. You don’t have to do everything at once.

When you’re starting out it can feel like there’s a hundred things screaming for your attention. So here’s the actual list that matters in the early days.

āœ”ļø Register with HMRC (as a sole trader, by 5 October in your second tax year, don’t leave it)
āœ”ļø Decide your structure- sole trader or limited company? It affects your tax and your admin (check with your accountant to see which situation will work best)
āœ”ļø Open a separate business bank account, keep your money and your business money apart from day one
āœ”ļø Some apps offer accounting software for free so start tracking income and expenses straight away (yes, from your very first sale)
āœ”ļø Keep every receipt (digital copies are fine)- five years, remember
āœ”ļø Check if you need any insurance for what you do
āœ”ļø Set a little money aside for tax as you go, so January never stings

HMRC isn’t impressed by a long list of expenses. It cares about one thing: can you back them up?

Here’s what trips up so many small business owners, you stress over what you’re allowed to claim, when the real question is can you prove it?

A genuine business expense is one that’s wholly and exclusively for your business. If it is, you’re fully entitled to claim it. But ā€œI’m pretty sure that was for workā€ won’t hold up if HMRC ever asks. A tracked receipt will.

So the magic isn’t in hunting for clever things to claim. It’s in capturing the everyday ones properly, as you go, not in a January panic.

Snap the receipt. Log it. Move on.

Want a system that makes this feel simple instead of stressful? That’s exactly what I help with, drop me a DM.

That receipt you nearly binned? Keep it. HMRC asks sole traders to hold onto records for five years after the Self Assessment deadline, and with Making Tax Digital rolling in, going digital now will save you a headache later.

Not sure where to start or what you can actually claim? Send me a DM, I make the boring bits simple.
