It is one of the most common misunderstandings in business.

Turnover is the income generated from your sales.

Profit is what remains after the relevant business costs have been accounted for.

So a business can have a strong turnover figure without making as much profit as you might expect.

That is why simply saying:

“We've had a really good year.”

doesn't tell you enough.

The useful question is:

What did the business actually make?

Understanding the difference can change the way you look at your accounts.

Save this if you sometimes find the difference between turnover and profit confusing.
