As the school holidays wind down, it's a natural moment for business owners to start thinking ahead too.

The final months of the year often bring a shift in pace, whether that's increased demand, new priorities, or simply the chance to reset after summer. Taking stock now, of budgets, goals and any changes on the horizon, can make the run-up to year-end far less stressful.

At AIMS Accountants, we help business owners do more than file their taxes on time. We work alongside you to plan ahead, so the final months of the year are covered by a clear strategy.

School's out, and for many businesses, so is a chunk of the team.

Summer holidays often mean juggling staff leave requests, covering gaps, and keeping things running smoothly with fewer hands on deck. A bit of planning now can save a lot of stress later.

β˜€οΈ Map out who's off and when, well ahead of time
β˜€οΈ Identify any gaps in cover before they become a problem
β˜€οΈ Consider temporary or flexible support for busy periods
β˜€οΈKeep communication open with your team about availability

How's your business managing the summer staffing squeeze?

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a cultural highlight for the city, and a major opportunity for local businesses too.

From hospitality and retail to accommodation and transport, thousands of extra visitors can mean a real boost in trade throughout August. If your business is benefiting, now's a good time to make sure your finances are keeping pace.

βœ… Track additional income and expenses separately from your usual trading
βœ… Review staffing levels against demand
βœ… Keep on top of cash flow during the busy period
βœ… Make the most of any tax-deductible costs linked to the extra trade

PAYE, NICs, and CIS: is your payment ready?

Payments for PAYE, National Insurance, and CIS deductions for July's payroll are due soon: 19th August for non-electronic payments and 22nd August for electronic payments.

βœ… Confirm the total due for PAYE, NICs, and CIS
βœ… Check whether you're paying electronically or by post
βœ… Set aside funds ahead of the deadline
βœ… Double-check calculations before submitting

⚠️ Late payments can trigger HMRC penalties, and interest is charged on any amount paid late.

Youth unemployment remains an ongoing challenge, and for many small businesses, hiring a young person for the first time can feel like a bigger commitment than it needs to be.

Bringing younger talent into a business can ease immediate skills gaps while building a pipeline for future growth, but it also comes with new costs and considerations - from onboarding to ongoing training.

At AIMS Accountants, we help business owners look beyond the day-to-day numbers to plan decisions like this with confidence, understanding what a new hire really costs and how it fits into the bigger picture.

Making Tax Digital: is your first quarterly update due tomorrow?

If you're one of the sole traders or landlords now required to report under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, your first quarterly update for 2026/27 is due 7th August.

βœ… Check whether you're required to submit under MTD this year
βœ… Make sure your income and expenses are recorded digitally
βœ… Submit your quarterly update through the right software
βœ… Keep records ready in case HMRC has questions

⚠️ Missing a quarterly update might result in penalties, and errors are harder to fix retrospectively once submitted.

Not sure if MTD applies to you yet, or need help getting set up? Contact an AIMS accountant today.

We're halfway through the year – a great time to step back and review how your business is performing against its goals.

Here are 5 key numbers every business owner should be monitoring:

βœ… Revenue – Are sales on track?
βœ… Profit – How much are you actually keeping?
βœ… Cash Flow – Is enough cash coming in to cover costs?
βœ… Debtors – Are customers paying you on time?
βœ… Tax Liabilities – Are you prepared for upcoming tax bills?

Regularly reviewing these figures can help you spot opportunities, identify potential issues early, and make better business decisions for the rest of the year.

How is your business performing so far in 2026?

The best business relationships are built on trust - and that includes the relationship between accountants and their clients.

Over time, strong partnerships go beyond compliance and tax returns. They’re built on understanding, consistency, and being there when businesses need support.

When trust is in place, conversations become easier, planning becomes clearer, and decisions become more confident.

At AIMS Accountants, we believe long-term client relationships are at the heart of good business advice. We don’t just work for clients - we work with them.

Payroll is one of the most important parts of running a business, but it’s often underestimated until something goes wrong.

Getting it right means more than paying staff on time. It also helps you stay compliant, manage costs and keep your team happy.

Key areas employers should keep on top of:

β€’ Accurate and timely payroll processing
β€’ Real-time reporting to HMRC
β€’ Correct treatment of benefits and deductions
β€’ Keeping up with changing legislation

Payroll errors can lead to penalties, stress and unhappy employees, so it pays to get it right first time.

If payroll is taking up too much of your time or causing uncertainty, it may be worth reviewing how it’s managed. Talk to an AIMS accountant to find out how we can help.
