It's Volunteers Week!

Volunteering isn't just about giving your time to charity. There are lots of skills and experiences that you gain in return. This week I will be sharing how I have personally benefited from volunteering and highlighting a local charity who would be greatful of addional help if you fancy getting involved.

was where I started my volunteering journey. I turned up one night to help out and was asked to collect £2 from each person who came to the ten-pin bowling night. This was my first experience of managing and organisations finances and quickly grew into undertaking lots of finance work for the charity.

Hire a Professional

I have seen and spoken to so many business owners who try to do their own bookkeeping and accounts and just get themselves stressed, confused and in a mess.

Many business owners try to do it themselves thinking that they are saving money, but in reality a good professional bookkeeper is worth so much more than the fees they charge.

As a business owner your time is much better spent marketing your business and selling your products to customers. If you spent an hour on a marketing campaign that later generates a £5,000 sale wouldn’t that be better than saving £20 by spending an hour doing the books?

A proficient bookkeeper will be used to what they are doing, have set routines and familiar processes which makes them more proactive and efficient at the job and their focus is just on the Bookkeeping which means it gets done quicker.

A good bookkeeper will stay up to date with regulations and HMRC requirements so they will have a clearer more up to date understanding of something that might save you hours of researching.

The connected finance approach; Optimise, don't choke your Hospitality Business Income

When hospitality owners get stressed about paying the bills, the knee-jerk reaction is always: "Cut costs immediately."

They trim the marketing budget. They cut down on staff training. They buy cheaper ingredients.

But as a qualified accountant amd with 20 years of hotel experience, I’m here to tell you: Unstrategic cost-cutting is a trap.

If you cut staff training, customer service plummets. When service plummets, reviews drop. When reviews drop, your occupancy rates disapear. You haven't saved money—you've just choked your income generation.

The Connected Finance Approach:
Business growth isn't about slashing expenses until there's nothing left. It’s about understanding how every process—from marketing to staff culture—impacts the numbers.

I help hotel owners look at the whole picture. We optimise business processes and reduce waste without sacrificing the guest experience that drives your revenue.

Stop worrying about the bills and start optimising your operation.

Make your money work hard for you

We all know how hard it is to earn money and how easy it is to spend it. Which makes it all the more important to make your money work hard for you. Here’s a few tips on how you can do it.

Pay off your most expensive debts first! We’ve seen loads of people who have money in a basic savings account paying pitiful interest rates, but also have loans and credit cards with massive interest rates. Use any spare cash you have to pay of the most expensive debt first.

Get paid for switching bank accounts. Some banks will give you an incentive of £100/£200 just for switching your bank account to them.

Check the interest rates on your savings and move them to a higher paying account. If the high rate is only for a specific amount of time, make a note in your diary and move it elsewhere when the rate drops.

Get a credit card and use this for Stoozing. (Warning, only try this if you are very disciplined and have a tight control on your spending). Basically, you get a credit card for 0% on spending for X months and use it for all your purchases.
