Registering for VAT before you have to – could it actually benefit your business?
Most businesses think of VAT registration as something to worry about once they approach the compulsory registration threshold.
But in some circumstances, registering voluntarily can actually make commercial sense.
If the majority of your customers are VAT-registered businesses, adding VAT to your invoices may have little impact on them, as they can usually reclaim the VAT you charge.
Meanwhile, your business may be able to reclaim VAT on its own eligible costs – potentially reducing those costs and improving profitability.
But voluntary VAT registration certainly isn't right for everyone.
If most of your customers are individuals or businesses that can't reclaim VAT, registration could leave you with a difficult choice: increase your prices to account for the VAT, or absorb some or all of it yourself and reduce your margin.
There are also the additional administrative and compliance requirements to consider.
Like many tax decisions, VAT registration isn't one-size-fits-all. The right answer depends on your customers, your costs and your wider business circumstances.
If you're considering voluntary VAT registration, it's worth understanding the financial impact on your business before making the decision.
