15/01/2026
Major changes are coming to the UK tax system on 6 April 2026. This marks the first major phase of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA).
The biggest shift is moving from one annual tax return to four quarterly updates plus a final year-end declaration.
1. Who is affected in 2026?
You must follow the new rules starting April 2026 if:
You are a sole trader or a landlord.
Your total "qualifying income" (gross turnover from business and property combined) is over £50,000.
Note: HMRC will look at your 2024/25 tax return to decide if you meet this threshold.
