The latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today provide another snapshot of the changing UK economic picture.

Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rose from 2.6% in June to 2.9% in July, with higher household energy costs contributing to the increase.

Inflation remains above the Bank of England's 2% target, while Bank Rate is currently being held at 3.75%.
Inflation matters beyond the monthly headline. Over time, rising prices affect the purchasing power of money, while movements in inflation and interest rates can also influence savings, bonds, equities and wider financial markets.

The latest figures are one part of a much broader and continually evolving economic picture.

UK Chancellor John Healey says the British economy is "resilient" as he reacts to the rise in the inflation rate.
"Iran war inflation continues to impact prices here at home, but Britain’s economy is resilient," he says.
"We have cut VAT on electricity bills and capped bus fares at £2 – to give breathing space to those feeling the strain," Healey adds.
"There is more to do to restore hope and build a stronger economy where prosperity is shared more fairly across Britain."

UK inflation has fallen to 2.6%

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation eased from 2.8% to 2.6% in June, marking the lowest annual rate in around 15 months. The fall was largely driven by lower fuel, food and clothing prices.
Newly appointed Chancellor John Healey says today's drop in inflation is "news families want to hear".
However, he stresses there is "much more to do to give people the breathing space they need".
"We have chosen to focus on the cost of living in our first week, signalling that concern for working people will be at the heart of everything we do”.

So, what does this actually mean?

• Inflation is still positive. Prices are continuing to rise, just at a slower pace than before.
• It doesn't mean prices are falling. Most goods and services still cost more than they did a year ago.
• One month's data is just one piece of the picture. Inflation can move up or down as energy prices, food costs and wider economic conditions change.

Economic data like this helps build a picture of what's happening in the UK economy, but it's always worth looking beyond the headline and considering the wider trends over time.
