📊 The UK's tax gap has grown to £59.2 billion. What does this mean for businesses?

HMRC's latest figures show that the difference between the tax expected to be paid and the amount actually collected has increased to 6.4% for the 2024–25 tax year.

One of the biggest contributors? Small businesses, which accounted for 62% of the tax gap, with unpaid Corporation Tax making up a significant proportion.

The report also highlights that the tax gap is often caused by:
✔️ Errors
✔️ Failure to take reasonable care
✔️ Tax evasion

While most businesses want to get their tax right, these figures demonstrate the importance of keeping accurate records, understanding your obligations and seeking professional advice when needed.

Getting your tax affairs in order not only helps you stay compliant but can also provide peace of mind and reduce the risk of costly mistakes.

If you'd like support with your tax calculations, bookkeeping or Corporation Tax returns, our team is here to help.

🚨 HMRC is increasing its focus on tackling tax evasion.

New figures reveal that HMRC paid out £1.4 million to whistleblowers in the 2025–26 tax year, following a record 170,992 reports of suspected tax fraud and evasion.

Under the strengthened reward scheme, eligible informants could receive 15% to 30% of the additional tax recovered in cases where HMRC collects more than £1.5 million.

The figures also highlight that small businesses account for the largest share of the UK's tax gap, reinforcing the importance of maintaining accurate records and staying compliant with your tax obligations.

If you're unsure whether your business is meeting its tax responsibilities or need advice on staying compliant, don't leave it to chance.

📈 Could a business plan be the key to your next stage of growth?

Many business owners think a business plan is only needed when applying for finance - but it's much more than that.

A well-written business plan can help you:
✅ Set clear business goals.
✅ Understand your target market.
✅ Identify your competitive advantage.
✅ Forecast your finances with confidence.
✅ Make informed decisions as your business grows.

You don't need to start with a lengthy document. Even a simple one-page plan outlining your business model, ideal customers and financial goals can provide valuable direction.

Whether you're launching a new venture or looking to take your business to the next level, having a clear plan can make all the difference.

📄 Understanding Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)

Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) are designed to protect a business's legitimate confidential information and can form part of an employment contract.

However, it's important for employers to understand their limits.

⚖️ According to ACAS, an NDA cannot be used to prevent employees from reporting workplace harassment, discrimination or certain criminal activity. Any agreement attempting to do so is legally unenforceable.

As employment law continues to evolve, businesses should ensure their contracts and workplace policies remain compliant and reflect current best practice.

The ACAS guidelines can be found at http://www.acas.org.uk/non-disclosure-agreements
