⚠️ HMRC Scam Alert – £47 million claimed fraudulently using 100,000 personal tax accounts ⚠️

HMRC has revealed that criminals have been using stolen personal info to create or access tax accounts and submit false repayment claims. The fraud totalled nearly £47 million and affected around 0.2% of PAYE taxpayers.

What’s worrying is that this wasn’t a data breach on HMRC’s end – most of the info used came from us. Details shared on social media (like your first pet’s name or favourite teacher) can be gold dust for scammers when it comes to resetting accounts or guessing passwords.

👉 Be careful what you share online.
👉 Always verify HMRC messages through GOV.UK.
👉 If something feels off, don’t click – check it properly.

🚨 SCAM WARNING 🚨

If you've recently set up a limited company, you might receive something like this in the post. It looks official and mentions Companies House — but it’s NOT from them!

👉 This is a scam letter asking you to pay £271 to “publish” your company information.
❌ You don’t need to pay this.
✅ Companies House will never send invoices like this after you register.

If you’re ever unsure whether a letter is genuine, check with your accountant before paying anything. It’s always better to ask than get caught out.

Feel free to share to spread the word — these scammers are relying on people being busy and not questioning it!

Even though I’m always up to date with my taxes, I nearly have a heart attack every time a brown-enveloped HMRC letter comes through the door. They should start putting “don’t worry - we’re not cross with you!” on their envelopes.

Why on earth does the UK tax year start on 6 April?

Back in the day, the tax year started on 25 March – which was New Year’s Day under the old Julian calendar. Then in 1752, we switched to the Gregorian calendar to get in sync with the rest of Europe.

That meant we had to skip 11 days (because we were that far behind). So, 2 September 1752 was immediately followed by 14 September. Everyone lost 11 days however….

…..Heaven forbid the Treasury should miss out on 11 days of tax!

So rather than lose that income, they just shifted the tax year forward by 11 days – from 25 March to 5 April (it actually landed on 4 April at first, but was corrected to 5 April in 1800 due to a leap year hiccup).

And that’s how we ended up with the tax year starting on 6 April.

Totally logical. Obviously.
