The tax question that changes everything.

"Should I operate as a sole trader, partnership, or limited company?"

There's no universal right answer.

It depends on:

→ Your income level
→ Your plans for the business
→ Whether you want to bring in associates
→ Your exit timeline

The structure you start with isn't always the one you should keep.

P.S. When did you last review your business structure?

Why year-end tax planning shouldn't start in March.

Every year, people rush in March to use allowances before April 5th.

But the best planning happens months earlier.

→ More time to fund pensions
→ More flexibility with investments
→ Less stress, better decisions

January is a great time to review. March is often too late.

P.S. When do you usually start thinking about tax year-end?

Five years of marriage today. 💒

When I look back over those five years, I'm incredibly proud of what we've built together.

Alongside moving home and welcoming two amazing children, I've also made one of the biggest professional transitions of my career, from being self-employed to completing a management buy-in.

It's a reminder that while business achievements often get the spotlight, they're rarely accomplished alone.

Behind every long day, difficult decision, and calculated risk is a support network that makes it all possible.

Success isn't just measured by business milestones, it’s also about having the right people beside you as you pursue them.

Happy 5th Anniversary, and thank you for everything. Here's to the next chapter.

Why I always ask business owners about their spouse's income.

It's not being nosy.

It's because the difference between a 20% taxpayer and a 40% taxpayer in the same household creates planning opportunities.

→ Dividend allocation
→ Investment ownership
→ Pension contributions

Sometimes the simplest restructures make the biggest difference.

P.S. Do you and your partner review finances together?

The question I get asked most by company directors.

"Should I put more into my pension or invest outside of it?"

There's no one-size-fits-all answer.

But here's how I'd think about it:

→ What's your access timeline?

→ What's your current and expected tax rate?

→ Do you have enough accessible wealth?

→ What's your view on pension rules changing?

The right mix is different for everyone.

What would help you decide?

The £100k income trap that surprises high earners.

Earn between £100k and £125,140?

You're in a 60% effective tax zone.

For every £2 you earn over £100k, you lose £1 of personal allowance.

That's why pension contributions at this level are so powerful. They can bring you back under the threshold.

Not many people realise this until it's too late.

P.S. Did you know about this before?

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly
linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well
as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.
The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. Tax relief is dependent on individual circumstances.

The retirement question I ask every doctor.

"What does retirement actually look like for you?"

Some want to stop completely at 60.
Some want to reduce sessions gradually.
Some never want to fully retire.

The NHS pension is flexible - but only if you plan for it.

Your answer to this question shapes everything else.

P.S. What does your ideal retirement look like?
