🚨 P11Ds ARE CHANGING FROM APRIL 2027

If you’re a UK employer providing company cars, fuel, vans or private medical benefits, there’s an important payroll change coming.

From 6 April 2027, mandatory payrolling will begin for:

🚗 Company cars
⛽ Car fuel
🚐 Vans and van fuel
🏥 Employer-provided medical benefits

These Benefits in Kind will need to be reported through payroll software and Real Time Information (RTI) rather than relying on the traditional year-end P11D process. HMRC says the relevant taxable values will be reported through the Full Payment Submission (FPS), allowing Income Tax and Class 1A National Insurance to be reported in real time.

And this is only phase one.

From April 2028, mandatory payrolling is due to extend to most remaining Benefits in Kind. Employer-provided loans and accommodation remain outside mandatory payrolling for now.

💗 What should employers do now?

Start reviewing the benefits you provide, the information you hold and whether your payroll processes will be ready for April 2027.

Because payroll changes are considerably less exciting when you discover them after they were supposed to happen.

🧾 SMALL BUSINESS BOOKKEEPING… but make it chaotic.

Be honest. Where are your receipts currently living? 👀

The glovebox?
The bottom of your handbag?
A carrier bag you’ve been meaning to sort since approximately 2024?
Or buried somewhere amongst 973 unread emails? 😂

Running a business is busy. Your bookkeeping system shouldn’t be “I’ll remember what that was for.”

Keeping your bookkeeping up to date means:

💗 You actually know how your business is performing
💗 Fewer missing expenses and mystery transactions
💗 Better visibility of your tax position
💗 Less panic when VAT/accounts deadlines arrive
💗 Your accountant doesn’t have to develop psychic abilities

And no, we don’t judge the carrier bag.

We’ve seen worse. Probably.

September is here, and it’s a good time for business owners to check in with their numbers, upcoming deadlines and plans for the months ahead.

Whether you’re a sole trader, landlord or limited company director, staying on top of your accounts isn’t just about keeping HMRC happy.

It’s about knowing:

💗 What your business is actually making
💗 What tax you need to plan for
💗 What deadlines are coming up
💗 Where your cash is going
💗 And whether your numbers support where you want the business to go next

At BP Accounting, we believe your accountant should do more than prepare a set of accounts once a year.

We’re here for the questions, the planning, the deadlines and all those “Fran, can I just check something…” messages in between. 😂

VAT registration just got a lot more interesting! Did you know you might reclaim VAT on some costs from before you were even registered? It could mean reclaiming VAT on goods bought up to four years prior and services up to six months earlier, but only if they're linked to your current business. Intrigued? Find out why this could impact your next VAT return and what special rules might affect you.

🚨 PENSIONS & INHERITANCE TAX ARE CHANGING FROM APRIL 2027.

For years, pensions have commonly sat outside of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

But from 6 April 2027, the rules are changing.

Under the new rules, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought into a person’s estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

That means your pension could form a much bigger part of your estate planning and potential Inheritance Tax position than it does today.

And for some families, that could mean a significantly larger estate exposed to IHT.

💗 The important bit?

There is still time to plan.

If you have significant pension savings, own a business, have property or expect your estate to be above the Inheritance Tax thresholds, it’s worth reviewing your position before April 2027, rather than discovering the implications afterwards.

Good tax planning isn’t about panicking when the rules change.

It’s about knowing they’re changing early enough to do something about it.

Follow BalancePoint for straightforward UK tax updates, HMRC changes and practical advice for business owners.

💗 SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS: YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE TO CHASE YOUR ACCOUNTANT.

If getting an answer from your accountant feels harder than running the actual business, something’s gone slightly wrong. 👀

A good small business accountant should be more than someone who prepares your accounts once a year.

You should have someone who:

✨ Answers your questions
✨ Keeps you ahead of deadlines
✨ Explains your numbers in plain English
✨ Helps you understand your tax position
✨ Spots things before they become problems
✨ Actually gets to know you and your business

At BP Accounting, that’s exactly how we believe accountancy should work.

Because business owners have enough to think about without adding “chase the accountant again” to the list.

💗 Questions answered. Deadlines handled. Advice when you need it.
