Following my recent post, as accountants who are passionate about helping businesses succeed, we recognise that the hospitality sector is under significant pressure.
Whilst accountants, advisers, suppliers and supporters can all play their part by providing guidance and support, and by continuing to spend money with hospitality businesses, the UK Government also has the power to make a real difference.
That is why we are supporting the VATs The Problem campaign. We would encourage everyone who enjoys socialising with friends and family, whether that's over a pint, a meal, a weekend away, live entertainment or a day out, to add their voice and sign the petition.

The hospitality sector employs millions of people, supports local communities and contributes billions to the UK economy. It deserves the opportunity to thrive once again.

One thing many people have probably noticed recently is that more pubs, bars and restaurants are now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, shortening opening hours or reducing trading times altogether.

And the reality is, many haven’t chosen to do that because they want to.
They simply can’t justify the staffing and energy costs to open during quieter periods anymore.

Across the hospitality sector we’re seeing operators battle:

▪️ Rising wages and National Insurance costs
▪️ Huge utility bills
▪️ Increasing supplier prices
▪️ Business rates pressures
▪️ Customers understandably being more cautious with spending

For many independent venues, it’s becoming a balancing act between protecting jobs, maintaining standards and simply surviving. As highlighted recently by hospitality advocate Lydia Papaphilippopoulos-Snape https://lnkd.in/es2aKQ62, the maths for many independent operators simply “isn’t mathing” anymore.

The businesses that are coping best are often the ones staying very close to their numbers and adapting quickly:

✅ Careful rota planning
✅ Tight cashflow management
✅ Reviewing opening hours realistically
✅ Smarter pricing strategies
✅ Protecting customer experience despite rising costs

At Fruition Accountancy, we continue to work closely with hospitality businesses across the Midlands and it’s a sector we genuinely care about.

But there’s also something the public can do too.

If you have a favourite local pub, café or restaurant… support them where you can. Book the table. Visit midweek. Recommend them. Leave a review.

And equally important is to be kind to the staff working there. Most are doing incredibly demanding jobs under huge pressure whilst trying to deliver a great experience with fewer people and tighter resources than ever before.

Hospitality remains one of the most important parts of our local communities, high streets and economy. It needs support, patience and understanding now more than ever.

This week, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, the team at Fruition Accountancy swapped calculators for aprons for our annual Team Development Day.
Yesterday, 26 of us headed to where we discovered that while balancing accounts is one thing… balancing cake mixtures under pressure is something completely different!

After a brilliant morning of baking, teamwork and plenty of laughs, we enjoyed a fantastic lunch at The Old Crown— huge thanks to Matt Deakin, Keeran McInerney & Ciaran Healey for looking after us.

We even had a light-hearted conversation over lunch about how the ingredients needed to bake a good cake are not too dissimilar to those needed to build a successful accountancy practice and business — the right mix of people, preparation, teamwork and adaptability all make a difference.

At Fruition, we genuinely believe investing in people, culture and wellbeing is just as important as investing in technical skills.

A great team day and a great reminder that sometimes stepping away from the numbers helps bring people closer together.

Spring always feels like a reset.

Easter brings a pause, a chance to spend time with family and reflect on what really matters. For me, that’s been time with my children, which always puts everything back into perspective.

At the same time, the new tax year kicks off, a fresh set of numbers, new opportunities, and for many business owners, a chance to draw a line and start again.

I was reminded of that walking through the tulips at Hatton Country World on Friday, everything in bloom, a reminder that growth doesn’t happen overnight, but with the right conditions, it does happen.

And then a completely different kind of energy watching the preview of the new musical Pride on Saturday. A great example of what happens when people bring passion, creativity and confidence together.

Different moments, but all pointing to the same thing:
- growth
- fresh starts
- and making the most of what’s in front of you.

As we head into the new tax year, it’s a good time to ask: Are you set up for what comes next?
If not, now’s the moment to sort it.

Is HMRC quietly killing tax planning for small businesses?

HMRC’s new consultation talks about “simplifying tax for small companies.”
But let’s call it what it really looks like…
👉 Standardising behaviour
👉 Reducing flexibility
👉 Increasing control
Planned changes include:
Quarterly reporting for companies
Expansion of Making Tax Digital
Possible merging of company & personal tax returns
Less distinction between salary and dividends

Here’s the uncomfortable question:
At what point does “simplification” become “restriction”?
Because from where I’m sitting:
Planning opportunities are narrowing
Timing advantages are disappearing
And the gap between “compliant” and “efficient” is closing fast

This could fundamentally change the role of the small business owner.
Less freedom to manage your own tax position.
More reliance on systems.
More reliance on HMRC’s version of “correct.”

Three weeks in South America reminded me how quickly things can change.

I’ve just returned from an incredible trip:- Rio Carnival
Búzios
Patagonia, crossing the Andes from Argentina into Chile
Wine tasting in the Chilean vineyards Santiago

While I was away, a new war broke out,
a reminder that the world can change very quickly

On a much smaller scale, business can feel the same.
Plans shift. Costs rise. Tax rules change. Markets move.

The businesses that cope best aren’t always the biggest, they’re the ones that plan ahead and stay adaptable.

That’s what we focus on at Fruition Accountancy, helping business owners think ahead, structure properly and prepare for what’s coming next.

Because whether you're travelling across a continent or running a business, the journey is always smoother when you've planned the route

The last week of January… aka an accountant’s endurance test

Every year it’s the same.
Long days. Longer nights.
And inboxes suddenly coming alive with “Sorry John, only just found this…”

Here’s the thing:-

You don’t have to wait until January to do your tax return.
If information came in earlier:
Returns could be done in June or July
You’d know your tax bill early
You could plan the payment instead of panicking
You might even reduce your July payment on account

And yes… your accountant might actually sleep!

January doesn’t have to be stressful for anyone, clients or accountants.
A bit of planning, a bit of kindness, and a lot less last-minute chaos.

So maybe this year: Dig the info out earlier, use your numbers to plan properly
and let January be… just January

🎄 A Christmas note from Fruition 🎄
As 2025 wraps up, it’s been a tough year for a lot of people — clients, team members, and me personally.
We’ve worked with businesses under real pressure, making big decisions while juggling everything else life throws at you. What’s really stood out though is the resilience — people just getting on with it, supporting each other, and doing the best they can.
I couldn’t be prouder of the Fruition team for the care, commitment and humanity they bring every day. And to our clients — thank you for trusting us, especially when things weren’t straightforward.
As Christmas approaches, I hope everyone gets a chance to slow down, step away from the noise for a bit, and enjoy some proper downtime.
Thanks for being part of our journey this year — here’s to a well-earned break and coming back refreshed in 2026.
