VAT should not come as a cash flow surprise.

For VAT-registered businesses, one of the most important habits is keeping track of the VAT you collect rather than treating every pound received as available cash.

Good records and regular reviews can help you understand what is likely to be due before the deadline arrives.

That can make cash flow planning easier and reduce the risk of an unexpected bill disrupting your business.

If you would like support with your VAT records, returns or calculations, PPS Accounting is here to help.

Is your bookkeeping giving you a clear picture of your business?

Good bookkeeping is about more than keeping records up to date.

Accurate, organised figures can help you understand what is coming in, what is going out and where your business stands financially. That makes it much easier to make informed decisions rather than relying on guesswork.

If bookkeeping keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list, getting some support can also free up valuable time to focus on running your business.

Haven’t signed up for Making Tax Digital yet? HMRC may soon do it for you.

From September, HMRC will begin signing up sole traders and landlords who are required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax but have not yet registered.

The rules currently apply to qualifying income from self-employment and property of more than £50,000.

Being registered is only part of the process. You also need compatible software, digital records and a system for submitting quarterly updates.

If you have been putting MTD to one side because you were unsure where to start, now is a sensible time to get everything organised rather than waiting for HMRC to contact you.

Good digital bookkeeping should make your finances clearer, not simply create another admin job.

Need help understanding what MTD means for you? PPS Accounting can help.

Are you still using the old mileage rate?

There’s an important payroll update for employers who reimburse staff for business mileage.

HMRC has increased the approved mileage allowance to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, with the change backdated to 6 April 2026. The rate after 10,000 miles remains 25p per mile.

That means it is worth checking what your business has been paying employees since April. Depending on how mileage has been reimbursed and processed through payroll, there may be adjustments to consider.

Small payroll changes can easily be missed, particularly when they are introduced part-way through the year and applied retrospectively.

If you are unsure whether the change affects your payroll, speak to your accountant or payroll provider.

When customers pay late, it can have a knock-on effect across your business. You may still need to cover wages, supplier bills, VAT and other regular costs, even when the money you are owed has not yet arrived.

A few simple processes can make a big difference. Make sure your payment terms are clear on every invoice, send invoices promptly, use reminders before and after the due date, and have a consistent process for following up overdue payments.

It can also help to keep a close eye on outstanding invoices so you can spot potential cash flow problems early rather than waiting until they become urgent.

Good credit control does not need to be complicated, but it does need to be consistent.

If late payments are affecting your cash flow, or you need support putting better financial processes in place, contact PPS Accounting. We can help you improve your systems and get a clearer picture of your business finances.

It can be tempting to use your business account for personal spending, or pay business expenses from your personal account, especially when you’re busy. But mixing the two can quickly make your finances harder to manage.

Keeping business and personal transactions separate gives you a much clearer picture of how your business is performing. It also makes bookkeeping more straightforward, helps reduce confusion when preparing your accounts and tax returns, and makes it easier to identify genuine business expenses.

Clear financial records can also save valuable time at year end, as there is less sorting, checking and explaining to do.

If your accounts have become a little mixed up, or you’d like support putting better processes in place, contact PPS Accounting. We can help you get your records organised and make managing your business finances feel much more straightforward.

ISA changes are coming from 6 April 2027, and they could affect how some savers manage their money.

HMRC has confirmed new rules for Individual Savings Accounts, with different rules depending on your age.

If you’re under 65, here are three key changes to be aware of:

1. Cash ISA limit: The amount you can pay into a Cash ISA each year will be capped at £12,000, while the overall annual ISA allowance will remain at £20,000.

2. Tax on uninvested cash: Interest earned on cash held within a Stocks & Shares ISA will be subject to a 22% tax charge.

3. ISA transfer restrictions: You will no longer be able to transfer funds from an investment ISA back into a Cash ISA.

Savers aged 65 and over will be exempt from these changes

The Government’s aim is to encourage more people to invest through the stock market rather than hold larger amounts in cash savings.

With changes like these, it’s worth understanding how the new rules could affect your savings plans before they come into force.

Not sure what the changes could mean for you?

A useful accounting tip for small businesses is to keep business and personal finances completely separate.

Using a dedicated business bank account makes it much easier to track income and expenses, reconcile your books, prepare VAT returns where applicable, and spot cash flow issues early. It can also save a lot of time when your accountant needs to review your records.

A simple routine helps too: set aside 15 to 20 minutes each week to check transactions, upload receipts and make sure everything is recorded correctly. Small, regular updates are usually far easier than trying to catch up months later.
