When you are self employed you pay your National Insurance through your Self Assessment tax return.

You start paying National Insurance when your profits are above £12,570.

You will pay Class 2 NIC at £3.45 per week, £179.40 a year.

You pay Class 4 NIC of 9% for profits between £12,570 and £50,270. And 2% on profits over £50,270.

If your profits are below £12,570 you may wish to pay voluntary National Insurance to avoid any gaps in your history, as any gaps may mean you won’t have enough years of contributions to get the full State Pension.

As a self employed person, you must keep records to calculate your profit or loss to file your Self Assessment Tax Return correctly.

But that’s not the only reason! 🤔Keeping up to date financial records helps you to track your financial position and improve your decision making. It can help you budget, price your goods or services and assist with investing in assets.

If you wanted to gain funding from banks or lenders, you would need up to date records of income, cash flow, costs and assets in order to gain that funding.

Ultimately it will help you manage and grow your business 🚀

Turnover is the total sales in a period. Also referred to as income or revenue.

Why is it important to know?

Not only is it an indicator of business performance but by knowing your monthly turnover, you’ll know if you need to register for VAT. See my previous post about when to register for VAT!
