"When I think about risk, I think, what's the risk if I don't do it?"

That's one of the lessons our Managing Director, Chris Brown, discusses in a recent interview with in-Cumbria magazine.

In the article, Chris reflects on the journey of building Brown & Co, from taking on his first clients and acquiring a small practice in Fleetwood, to growing a team of 30 people across Lancashire and Cumbria.

He also talks about the importance of confidence, resilience and being willing to embrace opportunities when they come along.

It's an honest look at the challenges, decisions and lessons that have helped shape the business we are today.

You can read Chris's full feature in the July edition of in-Cumbria magazine (page 93).

📍 Learning from local businesses

We had a great morning at the Pride of Place Responsible Business Network event at Blackpool FC this week.👏

It was really interesting to hear from local businesses and speakers about the links between energy efficiency, sustainability and running a resilient business. From practical ways to reduce energy use and costs to discussions around behaviour, culture and skills, there were plenty of valuable insights to take away.

A big thank you to the organisers and speakers for an engaging event, and it was great to connect with other businesses from across the Fylde Coast who are all exploring how sustainable practices can support long-term success.🌱

We're looking forward to continuing the conversation.

Why succession planning starts sooner than you think

📈For many business owners, succession planning is something that sits on the to-do list for years. But the earlier you start the conversation, the more options you have.

Whether you're planning for retirement, bringing family members into the business, selling to existing management or preparing for a sale, having a clear plan in place can help protect the value you've worked hard to build.

🔍 The earlier you start planning, the more options you have when it comes to the future of your business. It gives you time to think about what you want the next chapter to look like, while also considering things like tax, funding and the long-term direction of the business.

At Brown & Co, we work with business owners to understand their goals, explore the options available and help create a practical plan for what comes next.

The best succession plans aren't created when change is on the horizon; they're created years beforehand.

💬If you'd like to start the conversation, get in touch with the Brown & Co team today.

Think July is too early to start thinking about tax? 🤔

Tax shouldn’t be a last-minute January rush; it’s much easier when it’s something you stay on top of throughout the year.

A few small actions early on can make a big difference later, like:
✔️ keeping things organised
✔️ making the most of allowances
✔️ planning ahead rather than reacting under pressure

And if your profits have reduced during the 2025/26 tax year, getting your affairs up to date before the end of July could help reduce your income tax payments on account due on 31 July.

It’s not about doing more; it’s about making things easier for yourself.

If tax planning has been sitting on your to-do list, then there's no better time to start than now.

If you want to get a plan in place, feel free to get in touch.

Show season 🚜

Across Cumbria and beyond, agricultural shows are about far more than a day off the farm. It’s a chance for the farming community to come together, to catch up, share knowledge and celebrate the work that underpins rural life.

For Emma and Sarah in our agriculture team, it’s a time that really reflects why they do what they do. Both from farming backgrounds, they understand the pressures, the pace and the pride that comes with running a farm, especially during busy periods like this.

With years of experience supporting agricultural businesses, they’re there behind the scenes with practical, down‑to‑earth advice.

Agricultural shows are a reminder of the strength and connection within the rural community, something Emma and Sarah are proud to support not just during the summer months, but all year round.

And if you’d welcome a bit of extra support from accountants who understand farming, they’re always happy to have a conversation 👋

Making Tax Digital: simpler than you think ✅

At Brown & Co, we’re a digital-first business, so helping clients adapt to Making Tax Digital (MTD) is something we’re already doing every day.

But what does MTD actually mean for you?

In short, it’s about moving your records and tax returns online using simple, secure software.

And while it might feel like another change to get your head around, it can actually make life a lot easier.

Here’s how:
🧾 Less paperwork: No more digging through receipts or spreadsheets; everything is stored digitally in one place.
✅ Fewer mistakes: Digital records help spot errors early and reduce manual input, giving you more confidence in your figures.
📅 Stay up to date: Quarterly updates mean no last-minute rush and a clearer picture of your tax throughout the year.
📊 Better visibility: You can see your income, expenses and estimated tax bill in real time, helping with planning and decision-making.
🕑 Save time: Many tasks are automated through software, freeing you up to focus on running your business.

MTD isn’t about making things harder; it’s about giving you more control.

If you’d like to understand what MTD means for your business, our team is here to help you get set up and confident with the process.
