🏠 What happens to the property insurance when someone dies?

When dealing with the loss of a loved one, there can be a huge amount for families and executors to think about.

Probate, paperwork, bank accounts and the administration of the estate can all need attention. But there’s one practical point that can easily be overlooked:

Is the property still properly insured?

Following a death, the circumstances surrounding a property can change. The policyholder may have passed away, the property may be left unoccupied, or it could remain within the estate for some time while probate is being dealt with.

It’s important not to simply assume that the existing home insurance will continue unchanged. The insurer should be made aware of the change in circumstances and the insurance position may need to be reviewed.

This can be particularly important where a property is being managed by executors or trustees, or where it is likely to remain unoccupied for a period of time.

At Generation Financial Planning, we help families with their estate planning and understand that there are often practical considerations to deal with alongside the legal and financial aspects following a bereavement.

Property insurance may seem like a relatively small detail at such a difficult time, but making sure what could be one of the estate’s largest assets remains appropriately protected is an important consideration.

What happens if you die without a Will?

Without a valid Will, the law decides who inherits your estate, which may not reflect what you would have wanted.

A Will can help you:

• Decide who inherits
• Appoint guardians for your children
• Choose who deals with your estate
• Protect beneficiaries through trusts
• Make sure your wishes are clearly set out

A Will isn't just about who gets what. It's about putting the right plans in place for the people you care about.

Evening reading 🌙📖: The Government has announced major reforms to parental responsibility and child protection ⚖️👶.

As parents, our priority is keeping our children safe ❤️🏡 — and these changes could affect guardianship decisions, especially in blended or separated families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦.

🚨 A Silent Financial Crisis: Outdated Government Rules Are Costing Families Their Homes, Their Inheritance — Their Tax Allowances — and Their Financial Future 🚨

Most families have no idea how much control government rules and tax laws take over their estate if they die without a valid Will.
And the financial consequences can be devastating.

In our latest investigative article, Generation Financial Planning exposes how:

• Government intestacy rules decide who inherits
• Homes can be taken into account for care fees
• Avoidable inheritance tax drains estates unnecessarily
• Partners and children can be left with little — or nothing
• Lifetimes of savings can disappear overnight under default rules

If you think your estate will “automatically go to the right people”… it won’t.
