"That job made good money."
Are you sure?
But what about...
The two days back on site sorting a problem.
The skip you ordered twice.
The extra materials picked up halfway through.
The stuff on the trade card you forgot was for that job.
The lad who was still there Tuesday when you'd allowed until Monday.
None of them look massive on their own.
Together they can completely change what that job actually made.
So try this.
Pick a decent-sized job you've just finished. One you're confident did well.
Take what you invoiced, then work out everything it really cost — materials, labour, subbies, plant, waste, extra trips, and all the little extras that weren't in the plan.
What's left?
That's the number worth knowing.
Most builders who do this properly for the first time find the real margin is a few points lower than they thought.
That's not bad news. It's information.
Because once you know what happened on the last job, you can do something about it on the next one.
Maybe materials need more room in the quote.
Maybe you need to allow more labour.
Maybe extras need agreeing and invoicing as you go.
Or maybe it's a type of job you shouldn't be saying yes to anymore.
The aim isn't to win every job.
It's to win the right ones — and actually keep some of the money you're working so hard for.
