What does lemon juice, a bank robbery and running a dental practice have in common?

The Dunning-Kruger effect reminds us that being an expert in one area doesn’t automatically make us an expert in another.

In dentistry, clinical expertise doesn’t automatically mean business, marketing or financial expertise.

Sometimes the smartest move is simply knowing when to bring in the right expert.

If you’d like an independent perspective on your practice, I'd love to talk.

**The hardest thing to see in your business might be the thing everyone else can see. 👀**

When you're running a dental practice, it's easy to get too close to the day-to-day.

You might be dealing with:

🦷 Recruitment that never seems to get easier
💷 Prices that haven't changed in years
📊 A busy diary without knowing what you're actually making
👥 The same problems coming back to you
⏰ A practice that still relies on you for everything

None of these automatically mean you've got a bad business.

But they might be signs that it's time to take a step back and look at what's really happening.

**How many of these did you recognise?**

**Don’t wait until January to think about tax.**

One of the biggest mistakes we see dentists make is leaving tax planning until the deadline is around the corner.

By then, your options can be limited.

Good tax planning happens **before** the deadline — not when you’re staring at one.

There may be opportunities to:

→ Plan ahead for your tax liability
→ Make the most of available allowances and reliefs
→ Structure things more efficiently
→ Make decisions before the year-end that could make a difference

The earlier you start the conversation, the more options you have.

**Tax planning shouldn’t be a January panic. It should be part of your year-round financial planning.**

From 6 April 2026, dividend tax rates increased by 2%, meaning the salary/dividend mix that worked well before may no longer be as tax-efficient.

With frozen tax thresholds and higher employer NICs, now is a good time for company directors to review their income strategy.

Tax efficiency can still be improved through employer pension contributions and carefully reviewing salary and dividend levels.

Everyone's circumstances are different but we can help you reassess how you get your income and ensure your approach is still working for you, get in touch.

Dividend tax rates have shifted – meaning your traditional salary and dividend mix might not be working as well as you think.

Planning for Inheritance Tax (IHT) isn't just about your finances, it's often about your family.

With major inheritance tax changes coming in 2027, many dentists and practice owners could leave loved ones with a much larger tax bill than expected.

Simon and David Abel of Vision Dental Wealth discuss what these changes could mean, why families should start the conversation early, and the planning opportunities that may still be available.

Register for our IHT webinar on 19 August to understand the impact before your options become more limited.
