"Homebuyers: You Shouldn’t Need to Use an Agent’s Mortgage Broker Just to View a House."
In this column I'm highlighting the FT Adviser's campaign to shine a light on this age old strategy of selling products to you, in order that you might just view a home and pressurising, no matter how subtle, to use those products.
Imagine being forced to use your estate agent’s mortgage broker just to see a home - or even to have your offer considered. That’s what 20% of recent buyers in the UK say they’ve experienced. Even more shocking: 52% felt pressured into compliance.
This isn’t just unfair - it’s a stealthy cost driver that narrows your options and can lock you into a mortgage that isn’t right for you.
Why it matters:
You lose the freedom to shop around for the best deal.
You may end up paying more in interest, fees, or insurance.
Transparency and trust in the buying process suffer.
What you can do?
Get your own mortgage agreement in principle - before engaging with agents.
Don’t be pressured - ask for proof of in‑house ties or incentives.
If you’re denied viewings or offers, speak up - report unethical pressure to the Property Ombudsman or National Trading Standards.
At the heart of this is a simple principle: Choice matters. Let’s work toward a fairer, more transparent housing market that empowers every buyer.
Beware the 'silent squeeze' from estate agents
