A little something I’m really excited about ✨

On 18th November, I’ll be joining a panel at the PFS Festival of Financial Planning at the NEC to talk about something I think is so important: how mortgage advisers and financial planners can work together to support better outcomes for clients.

Buying a home, protecting your family, building wealth and planning for the future are all connected, so is there enough collaboration across mortgage and financial advice and how can we improve it?

I’m really looking forward to being part of this conversation, sharing my perspective as a financial adviser and hearing from others across the profession.

It’s also a lovely opportunity to reflect on how far my own journey in financial services has come since launching my business in 2021. I certainly didn’t imagine all of this when I made the career change and I feel incredibly proud to have been invited to speak.

Financial planning starts with you, not your investments. 💚

It’s easy to get caught up in pensions, ISAs and investment returns, asset allocations, fund manager styles… but have you ever stopped to think about what you actually want your money to make possible?

Perhaps it’s retiring a little earlier, having more flexibility in your working life, helping your children get onto the property ladder, paying school fees, travelling more… or finally buying that horsebox🐴

There’s no right or wrong answer. Your priorities are personal to you, and they might change over time.

But understanding what matters to you is a really useful starting point when thinking about your finances and the decisions that support the life you want to live.

Because ultimately, it’s not just about how much money you have. It’s about what that money means for you.

One of those really boring bits of financial admin that is very easy to forget 👇

For most defined contribution (DC) pensions, your pension will not usually just follow the instructions in your Will.

DC pensions can have their own rules around who receives the benefits when you die, which is why it’s important to check your expression of wish/beneficiary nomination and make sure it reflects your current circumstances.

Final salary / defined benefit (DB) pensions work differently and have their own scheme-specific rules around death benefits.

Marriage, divorce, children, a change in relationship or simply a few years passing can all be good reasons to check your pension nominations are still up to date.
