Nobody prepares you for the level of responsibility that comes with becoming a parent.

Before children, I worried about me (and my horses, ofc endlessly 🤣🫠🫠🫠)

Now I worry about everyone, 2 legs and 4.

This isn’t about expecting the worst or living in fear. It’s about putting a few practical things in place and then getting on with making memories, muddy walks, school runs and family holidays.

These are the arrangements we’ve chosen for our family to help us worry a little less about the “what ifs.”

And hopefully, they’ll remain things we never, ever need.

For general information only and not personal financial advice. Protection needs and tax treatment depend on individual circumstances and may change in the future.

I’m still waiting for the day someone asks me to work out the length of the hypotenuse… 🔻

Understanding a pension, on the other hand, has come up rather more often.

The reality is that you don’t need to understand every page of your annual pension statement. Knowing a few of the key sections can make it much easier to understand what you’ve got.

These include:

• The current value of your pension.
• How much has been contributed by you and your employer.
• Whether contributions are being made through salary sacrifice or as personal contributions.
• The fund your pension is invested in.
• Whether your scheme offers flexible access at retirement.
• Whether your beneficiary nomination is up to date.

Every workplace pension scheme is different, so the information included and the options available can vary. Any retirement projections shown on your statement are based on assumptions and are not guaranteed.

Did you know your workplace pension contributions might not be based on your full salary?

Many schemes use something called qualifying earnings, meaning contributions are calculated on a set band of earnings rather than your entire pay.

For example, someone earning £80,000 could have minimum auto enrolment contributions calculated on around £44,000 of earnings rather than the full £80,000.

Different employers use different contribution bases, so understanding how your scheme works can help you understand what’s actually being paid into your pension.

Higher rate taxpayers often assume all pension tax relief is added automatically.

In some workplace pension schemes, such as those operating on a relief at source basis, additional tax relief may need to be claimed separately.

In this video, I explain how the process works and walk through an illustrative example based on an individual earning £80,000 and contributing £500 per month to their pension.

As with most tax matters, the outcome will depend on your individual circumstances and the way your pension scheme operates.

Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change in the future.

To be clear, I love Mrs Chat. She’s my therapist, parenting helpline, “am I over-reacting” sounding board, and she’s even my content checker to ensure I’m being compliant and not toooooo unhinged 👀🤣

But if your entire financial plan is based on asking ChatGPT a few questions and hoping for the best…

This video might be a fairly accurate representation of the process. 😂

Jokes aside, information is everywhere.

The real value is in thinking outside the box for your individual situation, both now and in the future, using human experience to interpret what matters, what changes over time, and what actually moves you closer to your goals.
