๐ข MTD for Income Tax โ the first return is already approaching!
If, in the 2024/25 tax year, your combined turnover from self-employment or property exceeded ยฃ50,000 โ not your profit โ then from 6 April 2026 you will need to manage your tax affairs through the Making Tax Digital (MTD) system, and your first quarterly return will be due by 7 August! ๐๏ธ
This covers the months of AprilโMayโJune 2026, and it can already be prepared from 6 July.
โ
What does this mean in practice?
โ Keeping digital records using compatible software
โ Submitting quarterly returns to HMRC
โ Submitting the annual summary return from the same software by 31 January 2028
๐ก Good news: in the first tax year (2026/27), HMRC will not yet issue penalty points for late quarterly updates โ but this does NOT apply to the annual return and payment deadline, where penalties will still apply.
As this will be the first return of its kind, it is worth starting to deal with it in good time. This is a new system, and it is likely that the first time will require more coordination until the routine is established.
โ The tax authorityโs system is also showing errors. Over the past 48 hours, HMRCโs system has gone down several times, and it is likely that receiving many new returns will put pressure on them, so for this reason as well it is not worth leaving submissions until the last minute.
