📣 | DID YOU KNOW?

18.5% of the tax due from Self Assessment businesses goes unpaid, according to HMRC.

HMRC estimates that the tax gap for Self Assessment businesses is worth around £5 billion.

That's one of the reasons behind Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, which now requires affected sole traders and landlords to keep digital records and submit updates using compatible software.

Good digital record-keeping can help you:
✔ Reduce the risk of errors
✔ Keep your records organised
✔ Make reporting more efficient
✔ Gain a clearer picture of your finances

At J F Hornby, we help businesses stay compliant, maintain accurate records and make the most of digital accounting tools.

📊 | MYTH VS. REALITY

Myth:
"MTD quarterly updates are basically the same as a tax return."

Reality:
Quarterly updates are designed to keep HMRC updated throughout the year and help you maintain accurate digital records. They are a summary of your income and expenses for the period, rather than a full tax return.

With the 31 July MTD quarterly deadline approaching, now is a good time to make sure your bookkeeping is up to date and any outstanding records have been entered.

Keeping on top of your records throughout the year can make the process quicker, easier and far less stressful when deadlines come around.

At J F Hornby, we can help you understand your MTD obligations, keep your records compliant and make sure you're ready for each quarterly deadline.

We don't just help with submissions.
We help you stay organised and informed throughout the year.

💻| DOES MTD SUBMIT EVERYTHING AUTOMATICALLY?

It's a common question as more businesses move across to Making Tax Digital.

If you're using MTD-compatible software such as Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, your quarterly updates can be generated from the records you enter throughout the year.

The software can generate your quarterly updates automatically, but they still need to be submitted to HMRC. That's why keeping your records accurate and up to date is so important.

✅ Record income and expenses as you go
✅ Keep your records accurate and up to date
✅ Check your figures before submission

When your records are maintained properly, MTD software can make quarterly reporting much simpler and save valuable time.

🏢| BEFORE YOU START A NEW BUSINESS...

Starting a business is exciting. You've got the idea, the motivation and a vision for where you want to go.

But before you dive in, it's worth taking a step back and making sure you've got the right foundations in place.

One of the first decisions you'll face is how to structure your business. Should you operate as a sole trader or set up a limited company? The answer can affect everything from how much tax you pay to how you're protected if things don't go to plan.

It's also important to think about record-keeping, registering with HMRC, budgeting for tax bills and putting systems in place that will support growth from day one.

Getting these decisions right early can save a lot of time, money and stress later.

At J F Hornby, we work with new business owners every year, helping them start with confidence and avoid common pitfalls.

💬 The right advice at the start can make all the difference.

📉 | ARE WE LOSING OUR ENTREPRENEURS?

Recent figures show new business creation is slowing across the UK, with the first quarter of 2026 recording the lowest number of start-ups since records began in 2017.

J F Hornby Managing Director Paul Hornby believes the trend reflects growing concerns around the costs, risks and responsibilities of business ownership.

💬 "Nobody starts a business because they want less security, more stress and longer hours, although those things come with the territory. They do it because they believe they can build something worthwhile and be rewarded for the risks they take."

According to Paul, many would-be entrepreneurs are now questioning whether that balance still exists.

💬 "At some point there needs to be a recognition that wealth, jobs and growth do not appear by accident. They are created by people willing to take risks. If we continue to make those risks harder to justify financially, we shouldn’t be surprised when fewer people decide to take them."

At J F Hornby, we work with start-ups and established businesses across Cumbria and beyond, so we're seeing first-hand both the challenges business owners face and the value they bring to local communities and the wider economy.

📄 | WHY IS PROACTIVE TAX PLANNING IMPORTANT?

Because good tax planning isn't just about meeting deadlines; it's about giving yourself more options.

✅ Proactive tax planning can help you:
• Make the most of available tax reliefs and allowances
• Improve cash flow throughout the year
• Avoid unexpected tax bills
• Plan ahead for major business or personal financial decisions

💡 If your profits have reduced during the 2025/26 tax year, reviewing your position before the 31 July deadline could show that your payments on account are higher than they need to be. Taking action early may help reduce the amount you need to pay upfront.

📅 Why it matters now:
The Self Assessment payment on account deadline falls on 31 July. By making sure your records are up to date, you can get a clearer picture of your tax position and identify any opportunities available to you before the deadline arrives.

We’ll help you:
✔ Review your current tax position
✔ Identify tax-saving opportunities
✔ Plan ahead to avoid surprises
✔ Stay compliant and meet important deadlines

📣| DID YOU KNOW?

57% of UK private sector businesses are sole traders, while 37% are actively trading companies.*

There’s no one‑size‑fits‑all when it comes to your business structure.

For some businesses, moving to a company structure can offer greater flexibility as they grow.

For others, staying as a sole trader is the simpler option, especially in the early stages.

It often comes down to things like your profits, plans, and how you want to run things day to day.

At J F Hornby, we help you:
✔ Understand your options clearly
✔ Weigh up what’s right for your situation
✔ Plan ahead as your business grows
✔ Make decisions with confidence

💬 Unsure what’s right for you? We’re here to help.
