⚠️ Don't Ignore HMRC's July Payment on Account Deadline ⚠️

Many self-employed individuals and business owners will be due to make their second Payment on Account to HMRC by 31st July.

What many people don't realise is that this payment is based on your previous year's tax bill – not necessarily what you'll owe for the current year.

If your profits have fallen, your income has reduced, or your circumstances have changed, completing your latest tax return before the July deadline could significantly reduce the amount HMRC expects you to pay.

By filing early, you may be able to:
✅ Reduce your July Payment on Account
✅ Improve cash flow
✅ Avoid overpaying tax unnecessarily
✅ Gain certainty over your actual tax position

Too often, taxpayers leave their returns until January and unknowingly hand over more cash to HMRC than they need to months earlier.

🚗 UK Mileage Rate Update 🚗

The approved mileage rate has increased to 55p per mile, with the change being applied retrospectively from April 2026.

This means businesses, directors, employees, and sole traders may need to review mileage claims already submitted since April to ensure they are claiming the correct allowable amount.

Key points to remember:

✔️ The updated 55p rate applies to qualifying business mileage
✔️ The change is backdated to April 2026
✔️ Previously submitted claims may require adjustment
✔️ Accurate mileage logs and supporting records remain essential
✔️ Ordinary commuting is generally not an allowable claim

Small changes in allowable expenses can have a noticeable impact over a full tax year, particularly for businesses with regular travel costs.
