A little reminder to take a break.

Whether you’re sat at a desk, on a building site, behind the chair in a salon or rushing between clients, it’s very easy to keep going because there’s always one more thing to do.

Take ten minutes. Get outside. Have a cuppa. Walk the dog. Give yourself a bit of time away from work.

Ernie is our Wellbeing Officer here at AFor Accounting, so he’s very good at making sure we take a break every now and then.

Going for a little stroll is both mine and Ernie’s happy place, so make sure you take a few minutes for you today too.

Are you still claiming 45p per mile?

If you use your own car for business travel, the mileage rate went up to 55p per mile from April.

It’s a small change, but if you’re regularly travelling to clients, meetings, jobs or appointments, those extra 10ps soon add up.

So have a quick check of what you’re currently claiming, especially if you’ve been using 45p for years out of habit.

This one covers the period from 6 April to 5 October 2026.

Something you might not know about me…

When I met my partner Charlie, we started buying experiences for each other rather than the usual presents.

We’ve done all sorts over the years. Quad biking, tank driving, zip lines, archery… and somewhere along the way, I tried clay pigeon shooting.

I absolutely loved it.

I loved the fact that it was competitive, and despite it being a very male-dominated sport, there’s no real advantage to being a man or a woman.

It comes down to you, your technique and whether you can actually hit the clay!

These days, a Sunday will often see me getting dressed in my lovely green shooting gear and heading over to Coniston for a few hours.

Although, typical accountant, I have a habit of over-analysing it. Before I know it, I’ve thought about the shot for too long and completely missed the clay!

Well, apparently Haleemah is better with numbers than me…

One of our clients came into the office, spotted our “Good with Numbers. Better with People.” sign and asked whether that meant Haleemah was good with the numbers and I was better with the people.

Well….

Haleemah is definitely good with numbers. But I’m not ready to admit she’s better than me just yet.

Yes, we’re accountants. Being good with numbers is rather important.

But so is knowing our clients, understanding their businesses and being someone they can pick up the phone and talk to, whatever day of the week it is.

Although I suspect Haleemah might still claim the numbers.

We’ve all done it.

Paid for something for the business on our personal credit or debit card instead of the business one.

Maybe you’re just starting out and you haven’t got a business bank account yet.

Or you’ve popped down the shops, remembered you need printer paper, milk for the office or something else for work, and paid for it along with your own shopping.

It happens.

As an accountant, my best advice is to keep a record of it.

Keep the receipt, make a note that you paid personally and make sure it gets recorded properly in your accounts as a business expense.

You can then reimburse yourself from the business, where appropriate, so you’re not personally out of pocket.

The important bit is making sure those expenses don’t disappear just because they weren’t paid from the business bank account.

If you’re not sure how to record something you’ve paid for personally, speak to your accountant.

“I actually enjoy year end approaching now!”

As an accountant, I don’t often hear that!

Sarah Garg is a civil celebrant with a fabulous business, and she’s been a client of mine for a while now.

When Sarah’s previous accountant retired, she found herself needing to find someone new. She wanted someone approachable, easy to contact and someone she could ask questions along the way.

I thought it was probably about time I reintroduced myself and the team behind AFor Accounting.

I’m Allison, and I started AFor back in 2014. Whilst I’m an accountant by day, I’m also CIA certified and work security at all sorts of events, so there’s definitely more to me than numbers and tax returns!

Then there’s the rest of the AFor family.

Haleemah is our Finance Manager and keeps the office running day to day alongside her bookkeeping and accounting work.

Ameenah is one of our Accounts Associates. She also looks after social media, marketing and promotions and somehow keeps on top of phones and staffing rotas too.

Kelly is our Administrative Support Officer and the person keeping diaries organised and making sure things actually get done.

Alan is also an Accounts Associate and works closely within one of our clients’ businesses, overseeing their accounts department.

Dave is our Chartered Accountant and brings more than 20 years of experience across accounts, management information, budgeting and forecasting.

Then, of course, there’s Ernie, our Wellbeing Officer, Company Mascot and chief biscuit watcher.

We’re a close team, and that family and friends feel is really important to us. That’s why our tagline is Good with Numbers, Better with People.

We want our clients to feel comfortable picking up the phone, whatever time of day it is, popping in for a chat or asking the question that’s been keeping them up at night.

It will probably come as no surprise that I would suggest speaking to an accountant when you’re setting up a business.

Getting the basics right from the beginning can save you a lot of headaches later on.

👉 Are you going to be a sole trader or limited company?

👉 Are you working from home or renting premises?

👉 Have you got the right bank account? Do you need to register for payroll? What needs sorting with HMRC?

There’s quite a bit to think about, and it’s much easier to get these things set up properly at the beginning than try to untangle them six months down the line.

Then there’s the money. Suppliers, premises, insurance, marketing and everything else that comes with running a business. You need to know what you can afford and where that money is coming from.

So before you get too far down the road, speak to an accountant.

Get the right advice, know what needs doing and get your finances off on the right foot.
