Got a letter from HMRC? Don't panic.
That brown envelope landing on the doormat doesn't exactly fill you with joy, right?
But most HMRC letters are routine. They're not trying to catch you out.
Here's what the most common ones actually mean:
π© "Tax return reminder" β You need to file. It's a nudge, not a threat. But don't ignore it because deadlines come with penalties.
π© "Payment due" β Tax is owed and they're telling you when to pay. Straightforward. Just make sure you know the deadline.
π© "Compliance check" β This sounds scarier than it is. It's usually a routine review of your records. They pick businesses at random. It doesn't mean you've done anything wrong.
π© "Late filing notice" β You've missed a deadline and a penalty may apply. The sooner you deal with it, the less it costs you.
That's it. No drama. Just HMRC doing their thing.
The important thing is not to ignore it.
Whatever the letter says, there's usually a deadline attached. Miss that and a small issue becomes a bigger one.
