📂 YOUR ACCOUNTANT CAN'T WORK MAGIC THE DAY BEFORE THE DEADLINE… 🪄😂

We'd love to say we can… but unfortunately, even accountants have their limits!

One of the biggest causes of last-minute panic when it comes to accounts, VAT returns and Self Assessments is simply not getting the information to us early enough.

We regularly hear:

😬 “I forgot to send that bank statement…”
🧾 “I've got a bag of receipts somewhere…”
📱 “I thought the bank feed was still connected…”
📧 “I'll forward those invoices tonight…”
🤔 “I'm sure I sent you that already…”
⏰ And the classic… “It's due tomorrow – can you just get it filed?”

The problem is, preparing your accounts or tax return isn't simply a case of pressing a button.

Before we're happy to submit something, we may need to:

🔎 Review and reconcile your transactions
🏦 Check bank balances and statements
🧾 Review invoices and expenses
❓ Raise queries with you
💷 Check payroll, VAT and CIS records
📊 Review the figures for anything unusual
🧮 Calculate your tax position
📑 Prepare the relevant accounts and returns
✍️ Send everything to you for approval and signature

And sometimes, one missing document can hold the whole process up.

⚠️ THE DEADLINE IS THE LAST DATE TO FILE – NOT THE DATE TO START!

Getting your records to us early gives us time to prepare everything properly, ask questions and make sure nothing has been missed.

It also gives YOU more time.

If you know your tax bill months in advance, you can plan for it rather than finding out a few days before it's due.

💡 A FEW SIMPLE HABITS MAKE A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE:

✅ Keep your bookkeeping up to date
✅ Upload receipts as you go
✅ Keep your accounting software connected to your bank
✅ Respond to queries from your accountant
✅ Send requested information promptly
✅ Don't wait for the deadline before checking what's needed

And if you're one of our clients and you receive an email asking for information…

We promise we're not emailing you for fun. 😂

The quicker we receive everything, the quicker we can get your work prepared and give you the figures you need.

At L&J's Accountants, we want the process to be as straightforward and stress-free as possible – but that works best when we work together. 💛

🔐 DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR HMRC GOVERNMENT GATEWAY?

If the answer is “I think so…”, “My accountant has it…” or “I haven't logged into it for years…” — this one is for you! 👀

One of the biggest problems we see isn't necessarily that people can't afford to pay their tax.

It's that they don't know what they owe, when it's due or how to pay it.

Your HMRC online account is something every business owner and taxpayer should have access to and understand how to use.

Depending on your circumstances, it can allow you to keep track of things such as:

💷 Self Assessment tax
🏢 Corporation Tax
👥 PAYE liabilities
🧾 VAT
🚧 CIS
📅 Upcoming payments and deadlines
💰 Payments already made to HMRC

And this is becoming increasingly important.

⚠️ DON'T RELY ON HMRC TO CHASE YOU BEFORE SOMETHING IS LATE.

We've seen people miss payments simply because they didn't realise something was outstanding.

We've seen Direct Debits that people thought had been set up – but hadn't.

We've seen payments allocated incorrectly.

And unfortunately, by the time it's noticed, interest may already have been added and penalties can sometimes follow.

Your accountant can tell you what your tax liability is, but ultimately, you should also have visibility over your own HMRC account.

✅ Know your Government Gateway login
✅ Make sure your contact details are up to date
✅ Check what taxes are linked to your account
✅ Keep an eye on upcoming liabilities
✅ Check payments have actually reached HMRC
✅ Set up Direct Debits where appropriate
✅ Don't ignore letters, emails or notifications from HMRC

💡 A Direct Debit can make life much easier.

Where HMRC allows you to set one up, it can help ensure payments are collected automatically rather than relying on you remembering another deadline.

But don't just assume it's active – check!

📩 DON'T HAVE A GOVERNMENT GATEWAY OR DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?

We can help.

At L&J's Accountants, we can guide you through setting up your Government Gateway, getting the correct taxes linked and understanding what you should be checking.

Having an accountant doesn't mean you should be completely disconnected from your own tax affairs.

It's your business. It's your tax. You should be able to see what's happening.

Need some help getting everything set up properly?

📩 Drop us a message and we'll point you in the right direction.

🚨 COMPANIES HOUSE ID VERIFICATION – DON’T LEAVE IT UNTIL YOUR FILING DEADLINE!

This is something we’re seeing cause more and more problems for company directors at the moment…

Companies House Identity Verification is now a legal requirement.

The new rules came into effect from 18 November 2025, with existing directors being brought into the requirements during a 12-month transition period.

And we are now seeing the practical impact of it. 👀

If you are a company director, you need to verify your identity with Companies House and obtain your personal code.

⚠️ Why does this matter?

Because when your next Confirmation Statement is due, Companies House requires the personal code for EVERY director.

If one director hasn't completed their verification, it can prevent the Confirmation Statement from being filed.

So please don't wait until your Confirmation Statement deadline to discover that something isn't right!

We've already seen issues with:

❌ Personal codes not being received
❌ Codes being sent to the wrong email address
❌ Details not matching Companies House records
❌ Directors unsure where to find their code
❌ Multiple directors where one person hasn't verified
❌ People leaving it until their Confirmation Statement is already due

✅ WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

If you're a director, make sure you have completed your Companies House ID verification.

Once verified, you'll receive your own unique 11-character personal code.

That code belongs to YOU – not the company.

If you're a director of several companies, you only verify your identity once, but your personal code will need to be connected to each relevant directorship.

You may also have separate requirements if you're a Person with Significant Control (PSC).

💡 DON'T ASSUME YOUR ACCOUNTANT CAN JUST FILE WITHOUT IT.

If we don't have the required verification details for the directors, Companies House may not accept the Confirmation Statement.

So if you've received an email or letter about Companies House ID verification – please don't ignore it!

📩 NEED HELP?

If you're confused by the new rules, haven't received your personal code, aren't sure whether you've completed the process correctly, or would simply prefer some help getting it sorted, get in touch with us.

At L&J's Accountants, we can help clients through the Companies House ID verification process and make sure everything is in place before their filing deadlines.

📩 Send us a message and we'll help you get it sorted.

💼 SOLE TRADER OR LIMITED COMPANY? MTD HAS CHANGED THE CONVERSATION…

Are you a sole trader because it’s genuinely the best structure for your business?

Or because it’s simply how you started… and you’ve never really revisited it? 👀

With Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now here, it’s a good time for sole traders to take another look at how their business is structured.

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 are required to use MTD-compatible software, keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC.

And from April 2027, the threshold drops to £30,000.

So for many growing businesses, the question of Sole Trader vs Limited Company is becoming more important.

But it isn’t simply a case of:

❌ “Limited company = less tax”

There’s much more to consider:

📊 Your annual profits
💷 How much money you need to take from the business
🏠 Other income you receive personally
🛡️ Limited liability and protecting personal assets
👥 Whether you employ staff
📈 Your future plans for the business
🧾 The additional responsibilities and costs of running a Limited Company
💻 And now… your MTD obligations as a sole trader

For some people, remaining a sole trader will still be absolutely the right choice.

For others, their business may have grown to the point where it’s worth reviewing whether a Limited Company would now be more suitable.

The important thing is not to stay with the same structure simply because “that’s how I’ve always done it.”

Your business changes. Your income changes. The tax rules change.

Your business structure should be reviewed too.

💬 Not sure whether Sole Trader or Limited Company is right for you?

At L&J’s Accountants, we can look at your individual circumstances, compare the options and help you understand what actually makes sense for you and your business.

📩 Drop us a message if you’d like to discuss your options.

🚨 Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – HMRC Update

From September 2026, HMRC intends to start writing to taxpayers who are required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) for the 2026/27 tax year but have not yet registered.

HMRC may sign you up automatically and then write to confirm this.

If MTD for Income Tax applies to you, you will need to:

📱 Use MTD-compatible software
📂 Keep digital records of your relevant income and expenses
📊 Send quarterly updates to HMRC
📝 Complete your end-of-year tax return

⚠️ Don't ignore your quarterly deadlines.

Under the new late-submission penalty system, you can receive a penalty point each time you miss a quarterly update or tax return deadline. Once you reach the relevant penalty threshold, a financial penalty can be charged.

If you receive a letter from HMRC about Making Tax Digital, don't panic – but don't ignore it either!

At L&J's Accountants, we're already helping clients get set up and understand what they need to do under the new MTD rules.

📩 If you've received a letter from HMRC, or you're unsure whether MTD for Income Tax applies to you, get in touch and we can help.

🚨 Don't Let HMRC Deadlines Catch You Out! 🚨

Missing an HMRC deadline can quickly become expensive. Late filing and late payment penalties, along with interest charges, can all add up – and they're often completely avoidable.

Here are some key deadlines to keep in mind:

📊 VAT Returns – Usually due 1 month and 7 days after the end of your VAT period.

💼 Payroll (PAYE) – RTI submissions must be made on or before your employees are paid, with PAYE and National Insurance generally due by the 22nd of each month (if paying electronically).

📑 Company Accounts – Must be filed with Companies House 9 months after your company year end.

💷 Corporation Tax – Payment is due 9 months and 1 day after your company year end, with the Corporation Tax Return due 12 months after your year end.

📝 Self Assessment – Tax Returns and any tax due must be submitted and paid by 31st January following the end of the tax year. If your tax bill is over £1,000, you may also need to make Payments on Account on 31st January and 31st July.

⏰ Leaving things until the last minute can lead to unnecessary stress, missed deadlines, and avoidable penalties.

At L&J's Accountants, we help our clients stay organised, meet every deadline, and keep on top of their tax obligations, so they can focus on running their business.

📞 If you're worried about an upcoming deadline or have fallen behind with your accounts or tax, get in touch today. We're here to help.

Don't wait for a penalty letter from HMRC – let's get everything up to date before it's too late!
