Is bank interest already taxed before it hits your account?

No - lots of people think that any interest you earn from savings is automatically taxed or exempt from tax.

In reality, most bank interest is paid before tax and not always tax-free.

You may have a tax liability if your interest goes over your Personal Savings Allowance which depends on your income and tax band.

For basic rate, the allowance is £1,000.
For higher rate payers, it's £500.
For the additional rate, it's £0.

So if you're earning interest: be aware of your allowance, keep track of what you earn and check with an accountant if you need to self-declare.

Yesterday, we were invited to attend the Hertfordshire Futures: Inspiring Hertfordshire’s Future event at the University of Hertfordshire.

The event set out a vision for the next decade and beyond, focused on ensuring Hertfordshire remains a county of opportunity for future generations.

Business leaders in the room were asked to help by:

- Taking on graduates and apprentices, giving young people the opportunity to begin their career journeys.

- Offering work experience placements. Too many students face the frustrating challenge of needing experience to gain experience.

- Mentoring entrepreneurs who are starting out in business. Support and guidance exist, but many don’t know where to access them.

As we listened, there was a moment of reflection: these aren’t things we plan to do in the future. They’re things we’re already committed to today.

Every apprentice hired, every work experience placement offered, and every hour spent mentoring someone starting out can have a lasting impact on an individual’s future.

We’re proud to be playing our part in a brighter future for Hertfordshire.

Last night, we had the privilege of attending Arise & Shine with our sister company,

We’ve been part of the Arise Innovation Hubs community for a couple of years now, joining the Chelmsford Hub in 2024 and opening in Harlow just a year later. It’s amazing to watch fellow business owners truly innovate and improve the world around them.

We’re blessed to be part of such an aspirational community and were proud to launch our own social enterprise last winter.

Our ambition is to provide accessible, friendly and helpful advice to first-time founders in their first 500 days of business. Thickbroom Enterprise CIC was created to stop the stress, anxiety and fear of the unknown that prevents many business owners from even getting started. We’re proud to have helped nearly 20 new businesses already, giving them free guidance on the legal and financial set up of a company. We are delighted to continually support the entrepreneurial communities of Hertfordshire, Essex and beyond!

Thank you, Arise, for a wonderful evening and celebration of the fantastic businesses we call our neighbours!
