What do you think about pensions?

Understanding your money mindset around pensions can be the difference to actively building one or not. Check out the comments section for our latest Insight on why your money mindset around your pension matters.

In recent years, pensions have often been viewed by many financial advisers as a “first-in, last-out” savings vehicle because of their favourable tax treatment. Under the expected new rules coming into effect from April 2027, that approach may need to change significantly.

From an estate planning perspective, it may become more important to consider drawing more from pension funds during lifetime, where appropriate, rather than leaving them untouched until death. This can help manage the potential combined tax charge of up to 70% that may otherwise apply to pension funds left to beneficiaries.

If you’re not sure what these changes mean, the team at Bigmore Financial Planning have you covered. Our latest insight What is Changing with Pension Death Benefits? covers what will be different and what you might want to consider when adjusting your estate plan.

With the upcoming changes to pensions forming part of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes as of April 2027, we have been working with our clients on the options they have to help mitigate IHT.

One of these options is a Whole of Life Policy.

Though these policies are more expensive than ones with a finite time for a payout, they can very well add value in the long run.

In our latest Insight, we look at what Whole of Life Policies are, how a pension might be able to help you cover the cost, and give an example of the financial figures around this option.

A principle of financial planning that is important to remember is the fact that we are all dealing with a future we do not know.

This is why, when building a financial plan, we will look at a variety of potential outcomes. These outcomes might include things that you can do to protect yourself and your loved if the worst was to happen.

Life cover often factors into these plans.
And not just for older clients.

If you are wondering what life cover is, an idea of what it costs and why you might want to obtain it in your younger years, please read our latest Insight from the team at Bigmore Mortgages & Protections.

Cost, coverage and health are all things that factor into the answer for the questions why should you get life cover when you're young.
